Applications are invited for the above post in one of the UK’s leading International Offices. The International Office plays a central role in supporting the development and implementation of The University’s Internationalisation Strategy focusing in particular on international student mobility (both the recruitment of students from overseas as well as the placement of UK-based students on study and internship opportunities with partners across the world), international teaching partnerships and international relations including support for students, staff and visitors from overseas. The University’s UK campuses are home to about 10,000 international and EU students representing more than 140 countries.

The successful candidate will play an important role in the leadership and management of the International Office with a particular focus on activities in the Americas. The role will ensure performance objectives and operational targets are met for international recruitment, teaching partnerships development and study abroad/exchange activity in target markets.

Candidates should have studied in the UK, be educated to at least Bachelors level and be able to demonstrate sound business acumen, strategic thinking and have proven ability to make things happen in an HE environment, working with sensitivity, tact and diplomacy. The successful candidate will demonstrate creative thinking and novel approaches to international student recruitment and will have a solid HE background with significant experience in an area of international office work. A professional marketing qualification is desirable.

Significant overseas travel overseas will form a key part of this position and a flexible and co-operative approach to working patterns is therefore required.

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / To manage, direct and plan international student recruitment activities in selected countries to help achieve institutional intake targets, including new market development where relevant.
To ensure appropriate levels of activity are maintained and adjusted in established markets, to provide cover outside the region of immediate responsibility and ensuring that continual improvement is made concerning international recruitment strategy.
Market specific responsibilities will include the full remit of traditional student recruitment activity, including market strategy development, event planning, enquiries follow up, attending recruitment fairs and activity effectiveness monitoring and close liaison with key academic schools/departments to leverage maximum international student recruitment opportunities.
To provide statistical and trend data and analysis on international recruitment, partnerships and study abroad and exchange for senior management.
Fostering excellent working relationships with recruitment agents. / 50%
2. / To attend a range of internal and external events, including incoming sponsor and institutional visits, Marketing, Recruitment and Admissions Forums, committees, staff training sessions, workshops, bespoke advice to academic Schools and Departments etc. / 10%
3. / To act as line manager for identified members of staff in the UK and/or overseas offices. Staff selection, training, induction, goal setting, performance review and mentoring will form a crucial part of line management responsibilities. If necessary accompanying new recruits on overseas missions to provide on the job training as required. / 10%
4. / To develop, negotiate and support teaching partnerships in theregion, sourcing new partners, liaising with existing partners (including leading partner visits to the University), undertaking due diligence, supporting academic Schools with the negotiation of Memorandum of Agreements, ensuring approval of agreements and associated administration. / 15%
5. / To set up new exchange or study abroad agreements with universities to increase the numbers of Nottingham students spending time overseas. Developing, negotiating and supporting agreements in this area. / 5%
6. / To manage relevant areas of the annual planning and budgetary forecasting process. / 5%
7. / To project manage initiatives as required and to significantly contribute to the wider International Office remit, working across all teams, including participation in and/or management of cross-office activities as may be agreed from time to time. / 5%

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education /
  • Educated to degree level, 2.1 classification or equivalent.
  • A professional qualification in, or significant previous experience of, marketing

  • Experience of working or studying outside the UK
  • Masters degree
  • membership of the Chartered Institute of Marketing

Skills/Training /
  • Excellent literacy, presentation and interpersonal skills with evidence of building effective working relationships at all levels and communicating across a wide range of internal and external audiences
  • IT skills, highly proficient in the use Microsoft Office
  • Highly organised, self-motivated and committed, with the ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision and find solutions to complex issues as they arise
  • Numerate with prior experience of budgetary management and/or statistical analysis

Experience /
  • Considerable specialist experience of international student recruitment / marketing in an HE environment
  • Experience of formulating and implementing marketing and recruitment strategies
  • Demonstrable and significant understanding of national and international educational developments and their impact on HE and the international student recruitment environment
  • Significant experience of overseas education systems / qualifications and in the provision of overseas qualifications equivalencies guidance
  • Solid understanding of the UCAS process and direct recruitment practices
  • Autonomous decision making responsibility and negotiation skills
  • Sound understanding of TNE and Exchange/Study Abroad in the international context particularly in relation to quality assurance.

  • Good understanding of modern marketing techniques and an appreciation of the potential of IT as a marketing and conversion tool

Other /
  • This role will require the role holder to spend considerable time overseas each year. A flexible approach towards working patterns is therefore needed which will include working weekends and evenings as necessary. The person appointed must therefore hold a valid passport and be willing and able to undertake significant amounts of travel.

Allocation of budget concerning the region within an agreed framework and plan. Setting up teaching partnerships & exchange/Study Abroad contracts, working with international institutions and academics in Schools at the University of Nottingham.

ii)taken in collaboration with others

Prioritising recruitment activities within the International Office. Devising strategic priorities for recruitment activities.

iii)referred to the appropriate line manager (please name) by the role holder
