Purpose of the New Role:

The successful candidatewillwork on the synthesis of low-coordinate organometallic complexes as part of a Leverhulme Trust supported project entitled “Structural Elucidation and Reactivity Modification in Metal-Organic Frameworks” in collaboration with Assoc. Prof. Deborah Kays.

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / Develop methods for the preparation of porous metal-organic frameworks. / 30%
2. / Investigate the encapsulation and reactivity of target molecules inside porous frameworks. / 30%
3. / Develop methods of characterising molecules encapsulated within metal-organic frameworks using a range of techniques. / 10%
4. / Engage in the daily supervision of graduate students. / 10%
5. / Write scientific articles and present work at meetings. / 10%
6. / Liaise with academic and industrial collaborators as appropriate. / 5%
7. / You may be asked to perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role. / 5%

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education / Demonstrate excellence in the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks and their characterisation.
BSc and MSc/Sci/Phil, or equivalent.
PhD in chemistry. / A track record of high quality publications and presentations in meetings.
Skills/Training / Demonstrate excellence in synthesis of metal-organic frameworks and their characterisation.
Reactivity studies of target encapsulated compounds.
Knowledge of air-sensitive synthetic techniques.
X-ray crystallography. NMR, FTIR, and UV/Vis/NIR absorption spectroscopies.
Proven ability to work independently as well as part of a team. / Abilityto play a leading role in research group in developing independent research pathways.
Experience / Experience in the chemistry of metal-organic frameworks.
Proven track record in characterising framework materials.
Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills. / A track record of published research in quality journals and presentations in meetings.

Decision Making

i)taken independently by the role holder

Synthetic work within a target area, general low-level spend on grant codes for consumables.

ii)taken in collaboration with others

Expensive (ca>100GBP) purchases.

iii)referred to the appropriate line manager by the role holder

Overarching target areas for synthetic effort and studies of target compounds(Prof. Neil Champness)
