Job Title:Part time Bank Lecturers in Animal Conservation and Welfare

Post Reference No:AC45a

Job Purpose:To teach and assess on FE and HE Level courses across the Animal Management curriculum whilst maintaining and achieving high standards. To provide general support and cover for the development of further Animal Management provision.

Reports to:Section Lead Animal, Care & Welfare (ACW), Equine & Commercial Activities (Animals)

Grade/Salary:£20.18 - £22.30 per hour including holiday pay which equates to academic salary scale points L4b – L6c depending upon skills and experience.

Hours:Variable hours per week

Status:Fixed term for one year

Functional Links With:Functional Skills staff, 1:1 support staff, Animal Park staff and Animal Care Centre senior technicians.

Vision:

  • The College is looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated animal management lecturer with the ability to deliver high quality, inspiring lectures and practical teaching sessions. Good communication skills are a must. A flexible and positive attitude is required alongside the ability to challenge and motivate students. Teaching qualifications and an animal management qualification are both desirable. The role promises a varied and interesting workload. The successful applicant will have plenty of vocational experience as well as being able to demonstrate excellent administrative and organisational abilities in order to perform the role of Course Manager successfully. The role would suit someone who has worked in industry and is now seeking a new challenge.

Main Tasks and Duties:

  • Plan and co-ordinate the teaching/learning timetable for the programme area they lead in consultation with the Section Lead and within the framework determined by the Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Quality and cross college services.
  • Undertake teaching hours as contracted within the broad scope of the curriculum across a variety of levels and locations. This is likely to include some or all of the following subjects: Animal Nursing, Kennel & Cattery, Animal Health and Animal Behaviour.
  • Plan and review course content in consultation with colleagues within the ethos of continuous improvement.
  • Be responsible for the pastoral support and welfare of students in their group ensuring access to personal support through liaison with support services.
  • Monitor the attendance, punctuality and academic progress of students in their group.
  • Contribute to writing the Self-Assessment Report.
  • In line with College procedures, maintain contact with parents, guardians and employers, report on progress where appropriate.
  • Monitor and track the progress of individual students for all their learning.
  • Review student progress at least termly by collecting information against agreed targets; and setting challenging but realistic targets in action plans.
  • Evaluate the success of individual students in relation to their past performance and national standards.
  • Help students prepare for active participation in the workplace and community.
  • Provide reports and references for students as required.
  • Work closely with the Section Lead and Course Team to identify and develop new curriculum initiatives.
  • Use the College Disciplinary Procedure in liaison with the Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Quality.
  • To set a high standard of professionalism.
  • To monitor customer satisfaction and continually seek ways of improving the service for which the post is responsible.
  • To regularly review, adapt, and improve systems and procedures.

  • Where appropriate to undertake a teaching commitment as agreed with the Assistant Principal - Curriculum & Quality. For the 2013/14 academic year, this is likely to be a maximum of 50% of the annual target hours for the salary grade (ie a maximum of 396 hours).

  • Teaching, assessment and verification qualifications and experience.
  • In accordance with the FE Teachers Regulations 2007, teaching and instructing staff are expected to hold or be working towards at least PTLLS by their second year of appointment.Teaching staff will be expected to achieve the full DTLLS qualifications and gain QTLS within 5 years of appointment. Instructors will be expected to achieve at least CTLLS and ATLS within 5 years of appointment. Funding and time may be provided for new entrants without these qualifications. If you do not achieve the required DTLLS, CTLLS or PTLLS within the allotted time then the post will not be continued.
  • Experience of leading and managing staff teams and budgets at HE & FE level.
  • Experience of improving student retention and achievement.
  • Experience of identifying and developing income-generating activities.
  • Minimum level 4 qualification or professional qualification.

Terms and Conditions:

  • This is a fixed term appointment for one year.
  • The Contract of Employment will be based on the provisions of the Kingston Maurward Academic Contract.
  • The salary for this post will be in the range of £20.18 - £22.30 per hour which equate to academic salary scale points L4b – L6c depending upon skills and experience.
  • Working Hours will be variable per week during Monday to Friday with flexibility to meet business needs.
  • Holiday pay is included in the above rates of pay.
  • The notice period will be one month two months on either side.
  • Membership of the Teacher’s Pension Scheme is available.
  • The appointment is subject to the College receiving satisfactory references.
