The essential purpose of Young Life is to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to young people.This is largely accomplished at Young Life camps through activities that illustrate certain aspects of Christ's life and teachings.Each activity conducted by Young Life staff in the camp environment is intended to convey a specific message about Christ to young people, in a manner that is coordinated with other activities, leading to a continual spiritual experience during the week.

The duties of the mountain sports intern are an integral part of the spiritual program of the camp.The intern must be able to convey a sense of Christ-like hospitality and concern as he/she relates to campers, guests and staff. All staff members are expected to model Christian principles and the standards of Young Life at work and outside of work; staff members must represent Young Life positively and professionally within the local community.

This position ensures the safe and efficient operation of mountain bike activities by training and supervising summer staff, maintaining equipment, and overseeing daily operations.

Essential Duties

1. Minister to, direct, and encourage campers, guests, volunteer leaders, and staff in a manner consistent with Christian principles, Young Life’s mission, and the spiritual program of the camp.
2. Convey a sense of Christ-like hospitality and concern to campers, guests, leaders, and staff.
3. Work with other staff and camp leadership to help integrate the camp program into the Mountain Bike activity.

4. Train summer staff to safely guide campers, staff and other guests on mountain bike rides and to perform maintenance duties and emergency procedures.
5. Complete a comprehensive training for operation of the mountain bike program by the designated guest services specialist.
6. Instruct summer staff in maintenance duties, ride procedures, emergency procedures and other responsibilities as required.
7. Lead summer staff on training rides to familiarize them with the commonly used bike routes.
8. Practice emergency procedures with summer staff at the beginning of each staff assignment.

9. Supervise summer staff and manage the mountain bike program.
10. Assist the head leaders with scheduling rides for each camp week.
11. Assign and schedule summer staff to guide daily rides.
12. Perform necessary repair/maintenance of bikes, equipment and trails.
13. Keep bike shed neat and clean.
14. Assist the designated guest services specialist with ordering parts, equipment and supplies.

Other Duties
1. Be available to assist the Host with special program events such as the volleyball tourney, obstacle course and tableau.
2. Be able to rise to the unexpected needs of campers, staff, and guests that are not related to the mountain sports.
3. Attend all intern devotions and functions.

Qualifications
1. Must display a mature and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
2. Acceptance of and compliance with Young life's statements of faith and mission purpose statement, and Young Life's policies and principles.
3. Previous Young Life summer staff experience, preferably in mountain bike activities, or equivalent.
4. Have physical ability to ride a mountain bike over rough terrain for two hours.
5. Have some knowledge of bikes, related equipment and ride and repair skills.
6. Must be self-motivated, able to work and lead others with minimal supervision and possess a willingness to learn and accept direction from property staff and assigned team.

7. Must be willing and able to obtain (Lake Champion to provide) Red Cross Responding to Emergencies (RTE) certification.
