Job overview:

Responsible to the Director, FiS; the Manager contributes to the overall aims of Fairbridge by developing and implementing an annual team plan within the national strategy and associated frameworks. The Manager is also responsible for the day-to-day management of the team programme, finance, staff and resources in accordance with Fairbridge policy and procedures and relevant maritime legislation.

MAIN DUTIES:

  1. Strategy for the Spirit of Fairbridge
  • To prepare and submit an annual plan, incorporating the following areas:

  • Finance
  • Programming and delivery targets
  • Fundraising

  • Communications and public affairs
  • HR
  • Resources, including maintenance and refits

  1. Finance
  • To draw up and manage the agreed annual expenditure budget in line with operational requirements and associated income.
  • To ensure accurate financial records of income/expenditure are maintained and submitted for the team
  1. Programming and delivery targets
  • To market Spirit activitiesinternally in order to recruit young people from across the UK on to the programme
  • To manage the design and development of the team programme
  • To manage the delivery of the team programme to ensure targets are achieved
  • To maintain quality of provision in conjunction with national operations team
  1. Safety Management
  • To ensure Fairbridge maintains a robust safety management system appropriate for the operation of a Sail Training programme and with respect to the following:

MCA’s Small Commercial Vessels codes (SCV)

International regulations for the prevention of collisions at sea (IRPCS)

Code of safe working practices for merchant seamen

Health & Safety Regulations

Relevant merchant shipping & guidance notices

  • Work with relevant internal functions (HR dept., Facilities, H & S committee, TDM, national operations team) to ensure that all policies and proceduresare appropriate for the operation of Spirit and in line with maritime legislation
  1. Communications and public affairs
  • To assist & support national communications team using the Spirit project to raise Fairbridge profile on both a local & national level.
  • To develop key events as part of the team planand in conjunction with the national communications team.
  • Maximise communication opportunities, consulting with the Communications teamand ensuring results are fedback to national communications department.
  • To ensure effective communication with internal stakeholders i.e. Teams and Central support functions.
  • To act as media spokesperson as required
  1. Fundraising
  • Responsible for producing & maintaining an up to date ‘product list’ for fundraisers.
  • To support national and local fundraisers with proposals, product developments and to facilitate donor engagement through programme activities such as daysails, donor weekends, quayside events etc.
  • To ensure that records of audit and reports on any grants are maintained and that necessary returns are submitted on time.
  • To support account management activities to fulfil donors’ needs for publicity and employee involvement.
  • To represent the interest of Fairbridge nationally, regionally and locally with funders and at events
  1. HR
  • To line manage team staff
  • To manage the recruitment and selection of team staff
  • To manage the training and development of team staff
  • To manage the implementation of the disciplinary and grievance procedures for team staff
  1. Resources
  • Maintain an accurate long-term maintenance plan for Spirit of Fairbridge & associated equipment.
  • Negotiate contracts & purchase of equipment & services for refits, equipment replacement, & vessel maintenance to meet project strategy & long-term maintenance plan.
  • To ensure that Spirit of Fairbridge & associated equipment is maintained to the MCA ‘code of practice for small commercial vessels’.
  • To negotiate berthing arrangements for Spirit of Fairbridge.
  1. Administration
  • To manage the administrative systems and processes of the teamincluding the development and maintenance of monitoring and evaluation of our service.

Person Specification for

MANAGER – Spirit of Fairbridge:

This would be the minimum criteria required before an individual could be offered a Manager’s post.

  • Significant experience within the ‘sail training’ environment
  • Basic understanding of the needs of socially excluded young people
  • Understanding of the MCA code of practice for SCV
  • Understanding of the Code of safe working practice for merchant seamen
  • RYA Yachtmaster Instructor (commerciallyendorsed)
  • Understanding of development training processes
  • Good level of verbal and non-verbal presentation/communication skills
  • Basic computer skills (producing Word documents)
  • Evidenced experience of line-managing staff/volunteers
  • Evidenced experience of managing a business, department or project
  • Evidenced experience of managing & maintaining sailing vessels
  • Experience of planning & managing a significant budget (>£100,000)
  • Experience of fundraising/negotiating contracts
  • Basic understanding of Equal Opportunities law and practice
  • Committed to promoting the safeguarding and welfare of young people
  • Driving licence with access to a car
  • Willingness travel frequently to wherever Spirit is located in the UK either by driving or using public transport, as appropriate
