Job Title:Maintenance Supervisor

Salary:Grade E: £19,701 - £21,514per annum

(dependant on relevant skills and experience)

Hours:37.5 per week

Base:Across South Wales with days at the Sustrans Cardiff office occasionally required

Job purpose:

To supervise the Sustrans Maintenance team and assist the Land and Maintenance Manager in scheduling and delivering high quality maintenance work on Sustrans owned land forming the National Cycle Network in Wales. To maintain the general condition of the National Cycle Network in South Wales, carry out regular safety checks on selected sections and sites and reporting appropriate issues to the Sustrans national office.

To liaise with the path users, Sustrans Volunteer Rangers, neighbours and local authority officers when necessary and undertake specific route construction related activities where appropriate.

Key responsibilities:

  1. To lead a team to maintain our existing cycle paths and associated infrastructure.
  2. To assist the Land and Maintenance Manager in scheduling work programmes for proactive maintenance of Sustrans owned paths.
  3. To line manage the Maintenance operative with support from the Land Manager
  4. To coordinate and supervise volunteer workdays on Sustrans owned land with assistance from the Land Manager
  5. To lead a team in the construction of new paths when necessary with support from the Land and Maintenance Manager
  6. To be responsible for undertaking plannedmaintenance to an agreed standardtimeframe and in compliance with appropriate Health and Safety procedures.
  7. To investigate reports, from Sustrans Volunteers or members of the public, for unplanned work and to make recommendations to the Land and Maintenance Manager for remedial action
  8. To assist in coordinating and liaison with external contractors undertaking work on Sustrans owned land, with support from the Land and Maintenance Manager
  9. To use appropriate IT systems to liaise with and report to the Land and Maintenance Manager and for record keeping
  10. To assist the Land and Maintenance Manager in measures designed to raise income from Sustrans Land Estate
  11. To ensure that paths on Sustrans owned estate,or for which Sustrans has a maintenance liability,are safe to use by carrying out regular safety checks and to take the appropriate action where necessary.
  12. To carry out inspections of Sustrans held land as directed by the Land and Maintenance Manager
  13. To have an understanding of approved waste management protocols and to provide guidance/advice to the team to ensure that the environment on Sustrans owned estate is kept clear from litter/fly-tipping in accordance with these protocols.
  14. To keep the Sustrans Van and Lock up in good order and to complete necessary paperwork on their upkeep
  15. To carry out regular vegetation management and report major requirements to the Area Manager or Land and Maintenance Manager
  16. To control authorised access on to managed sections of the NCN and to report unauthorised use.
  17. To complete regular reporting forms and record keeping for monitoring purposes.
  18. To maintain public relations and be an ambassador for Sustrans.

  1. To contribute to development of method statements and safe working procedures.

  1. To attend essential Sustrans training as required by the Charity.
  2. To ensure own personal development by working to objectives set as part of the Charity’s appraisal process.

Person Specification

Criteria / Essential
Qualifications, education and training / Good standard of education
Full driving licence (eligible to drive van)
Experience / Experience of leading a team on maintenance operations or programmes
General experience associated with path or land maintenance
Experience of a commercial working environment
Experience of Health and Safety protocols and site management practises in a maintenance environment.
Experience of undertaking risk assessments
Skills and abilities / To have as many of the following skills as possible:
Use of Chainsaw, Pesticide, Brushcutter, Mower, Chipper, Working platforms, Dumper, Roller,Site Management and First Aid
Ability to use Microsoft Office systems such as email, spreadsheets, word, use of websites
Understanding of map reading and sat-nav technology
Ability to work as part of a team
Ability to work unsupervised
Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills
Knowledge of NCN across South Wales
Other / Good attention to detail
Self-motivated
Able and willing to travel across South Wales
Prepared to undertake manual labour in all weather conditions
