Position Summary: Responsible for planning, organizingand directing all aspects of the laboratory department in theclinic.

Essential Service Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • Help lost patients and guests find their way by walking them to their destination when needed (seek help from co-workers as needed to assure coverage).
  • Take all measures to protect the privacy of patients, employees, and guests.
  • Engagepatients, employees, and guests by making eye contact within 10 feet. Welcomepatients, employees, and guests with a smile, a warm greeting,and positive body language within 5 feet. When possible, acknowledgepatients, employees, and guests by name.
  • Introduce self to patients, employees, and guests by stating your name during face to face encounters.
  • Explain to the patients, employees, and guests what to expect during each step of the process that you are performing during the encounter with the patients, employees, or guests.
  • Ask for patient’s, employee’s, and guests’ permission: Use “May I” before statements.
  • Always demonstrate gratitude.
  • Thank the patient for choosing Cornerstone Health Care as their Medical Home. Every patient, every time.
  • Apologize to patients, employees, and guests for any wait time or inconvenience.
  • Be a team player and remove the phrase “It’s not my job” from your vocabulary.

  • Communicate timelines to patients and guests throughout the entire encounter. Inform of any delays, at least every 15 minutes (when assigned/as duty calls).
  • Practice telephone etiquette, by answering the phone within three rings, with a smile, and stating “Good morning/afternoon/evening, your name, department name (when applicable), and “How may I help you?” If placing caller on hold, check back at least every 60 seconds to update them (when assigned/ as duty calls).

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Manages laboratory services in accordance with clinical and governmental standards and within established budget.
  • Practices sterile technique and prevents cross contamination. Handles blood and body fluids and deals with infectious patients.
  • Facilitates development of department mission, goals, policies, procedures, work standards.
  • Ensures accurate and appropriate completion of laboratory tests including the processing of outside laboratory tests.
  • Compiles/analyzes data on departmental productivity, activity, finances, prepares and presents statistical information to administration.
  • Coordinates cost-effective/ordering, receiving, inventorying of laboratory supplies with appropriate personnel.
  • Selects, orients/trains, monitors, evaluates employees and oversees work assignments and daily operations.
  • Reviews departmental performance and ensures compliance with accreditation, legal, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Prepares annual budget for the laboratory and courier service.
  • Maintains superior working knowledge as required of a registered Medical Technologist.
  • Administers direct supervision to laboratory, phlebotomy, and courier staff.
  • Maintains overall responsibility of regulatory requirements applicable to the clinical laboratory including CLIA, COLA, HCFA, and OSHA.
  • Troubleshoots LIS and maintains current database required for order entry and result entry of all tests.
  • HFCA Technical Consultant for 10 outlying provider office labs to provide guidance and recommendations to satisfy regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinates courier service for 30 corporate locations including mail, x-rays, and laboratory specimens and ensures efficient and reliable courier service.
  • Evaluates current test methods to increase revenue to promote a competitive service.
  • Provides consistent level of superior customer service to all providers.
  • Evaluates vendor pricing to maintain lab overhead.
  • Reviews reference lab bills to insure no unnecessary loss of revenue and addresses issues with office managers as necessary.
  • Provides recommendations for lab improvement, expansions, and projects future growth.
  • Serves as liaison for medical staff, addressing complaints, preparing reports, and attending corporate meetings as requested.
  • Fosters an environment of mutual respect with special concern for confidentiality and the privacy of others.
  • Provides a friendly, safe, timely, quality-driven environment responsive to patients’ needs.
  • Helps motivate all employees to work together as a team to generate a work atmosphere that maintains a positive attitude.

Education and Experience:

  • BA/BS, preferably in health administration.
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible positions in laboratory, including two years of supervisory experience.
  • Current certification as Medical Technologist (ASCP).

  • Physical Demands: Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports. Must be able to lift/carry/push 40 pounds. May be required to assist with the transportation, transfer, and ambulation of patients. May be required to transport patients via wheelchair weighing up to 300 pounds (equivalent to 50 pounds pushing pressure). Occasional stress from workload.
  • Work Environment: Primarily laboratory setting. Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, sharp instruments, fumes, hazardous materials.
