POSITION DESCRIPTION

Job Title:Laboratory Assistant

Reports To:Analytical Specialist or Supervising Chemist

Job Summary:

Perform duties to clean and sterilize laboratory glassware; clean equipment and laboratory work area; distribute sample supplies, samples and solutions as instructed.

Essential Functions:

Follow standard operating procedures, wash, acid clean and sterilize laboratory glassware and various types of containers as requested. Wash laboratory equipment and clean laboratory area.

Operate laboratory equipment including: autoclave, dishwasher, floor scrubber, pH meter.

Handle and dispose of various waste materials in a prescribed manner.

Perform basic readings and measurements of wastewater parameters and record information according to standard operating procedures. Assist wastewater analysts in performing routine tasks.

Operate an automobile to collect, pick up and deliver samples; distribute supplies and materials from the stockroom.

Provide clear spoken information about issues, tasks, or situations.

Use a computer for storing and retrieving information as well as to perform calculations.

Observe safe work practices as described in the Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan.

Non-Essential Functions:

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Education:High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:Science courses or laboratory experience desired.

Specific Skills:Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to work carefully with potentially dangerous substances and with valuable equipment.

Specialized Knowledge, Licenses, etc:

Valid state of Ohio driver’s license and record in accordance with the District’s insurance carrier.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

Working Conditions:

General office, lab and outside environments.

Physical Demands:

Half of the time spent standing and walking and up to 50% time spent sitting with occasional stooping, kneeling, and climbing.

Internal:Interfaces with District personnel throughout the organization.

External:None.
