Background

Lumos is a registered charity working to transform the lives of disadvantaged children by facilitating the end of institutional care. We work to tackle poverty and disadvantage, to promote educational inclusion, child health and development, and to prevent child abuse and neglect in any part of the world. Our work currently focuses in particular on Moldova, Montenegro, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic.

With the involvement of skilled professionals, we raise awareness of the plight of children to those who can help and promote best practice. Our target audience includes central governments, local authorities, non-governmental organisations, local communities and the general public.

Job Purpose

The post of Head of Fundraising has been created to lead the development of a new fundraising programme for Lumos. Their challenge is to build a sustainable income base; securing income from individuals, companies, trusts and foundations and government. Working with the Chief Executive, and Trustees, the post-holder will lead on all aspects of fundraising, maintaining high level relationships with donors and prospects, as well as maximising opportunities to secure new sources of income.

It is a new and important role for Lumos, created to enable the organisation to attract significant and sustained income growth over the next few years.

Role Summary

Working closely with the Chief Executive, the Head of Fundraising will lead all aspects of Lumos’ fundraising work. Primary duties include:

  • Lead the introduction of a successful five year fundraising strategy in order to achieve the outcomes envisaged in our strategic plan.
  • Lead the delivery of effective systems and processes to ensure efficient fundraising operations, working closely with the Finance Team.
  • Work closely with the Chief Executive and other senior team managers on ensuring good governance, efficiency, impact and value for money of all Lumos’ activities.
  • Deliver against defined income and expenditure targets.
  • Ensure high-quality donor care.
  • Ensure Lumos maximises income from all possible sources.
  • Manage a personal portfolio of donors and achieve a personal income target each year
  • Build trust and understanding about the fundraising process with colleagues within Lumos and Trustees.
  • Build up project information and create systems and processes to support reporting to donors.
  • Lead, manage and motivate the fundraising team, ensuring that they have clear objectives and receive meaningful feedback on their performance. Attract, retain and develop talented individuals as part of this team.
  • Provide support to Trustees and senior managers to engage them in the fundraising process.
  • Ensure all Lumos’ activities follow internal procedures and, in particular, respect policies relating to child protection.
  • Represent Lumos publicly, when requested by the Chief Executive.

Person Specification

Essential

  • A leader. Someone who displays conviction, has the ability to carry people with them and who has experience of managing people through change
  • Demonstrates a high degree of personal gravitas and influence within a fundraising or commercial environment
  • At least 8 years’ senior management experience of fundraising, with a track record of delivering income targets in two or more fundraising areas (ideally major gifts, corporate fundraising or individual giving)
  • Experience of managing a fundraising team, including recruitment, management, support and evaluation of staff
  • Computer literate
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • A track record of personally delivering to challenging goals.
  • Experienced in managing budgets.
  • The ability to work collaboratively across departmental boundaries to achieve shared organisational goals.
  • External orientation. Someone who is focused on the market and our supporters
  • A creative and strategic thinker

Desirable

  • A demonstrated commitment to children’s rights
  • Willingness to travel
  • Knowledge of another European language in addition to English would be an advantage.
