Job Title:Deputy Head Greenkeeper and Deputy Site Supervisor
Pay scale:£17,161-£19,126 plus pension contribution of 5%
Hours:37 hours (seasonal hours apply but are under review)
Regular weekend working is required
Status:Permanentafter 6 months probation
Responsible to:Head Greenkeeper and Site Supervisor (HGSS)
Overall purpose of post
To ensure Warley Woods is well maintained and safe to visit by: taking a key role in carrying out grounds maintenance operations on the golf course and in the park and woodland;. by deputising for the Head Greenkeeper and Site Supervisor when they are absent and ensuring the team, and individuals on placement are consistently focused on the work that needs to be delivered
Main duties and responsibilities
Management duties
- To supervise greenkeeping staff, groundstaff and individuals on placement in the absence of HGSS.
- To help plan improvements to the site.
- To advise on purchases with the HGSS.
- To contribute to staff appraisals/annual reviews.
- To determine whether course should be opened for play and whether temporary greens should be in play.
General duties
- To carry out general horticultural maintenance operations including grass cutting, hedge trimming, leaf clearance, litter picking duties etc.
- To prepare the golf course for play including bunker raking, hole changes
- To safely use tools and equipment to undertake grounds maintenance operations including the use of powered hand tools and light plant.
- To carry out chemical applications and accept responsibility for others using chemicals
- To undertake fine turf renovation
- To carry out advanced horticultural operations such as planting
- To carry out construction labouring work, including improvements to the golf course
- To drive a wide range of vehicles as required including lorries, van, tractors (including mounted equipment), ride-on mowers.
- To work without supervision.
- To communicate effectively with the general public, responding to and assisting in their enquiries in a friendly manner
- To keep and update any records relating to the operation
- To be aware of all appropriate Health and Safety matters relating to the job purpose, ensuring your work practices consider your personal safety, colleagues and members of the public.
- Manage drainage and irrigation systems
- Manage the efficient use of resources
- Carry out such other associated duties as may from time to time incidentally arise, develop, or be assigned.
- To attend identified training
- To be aware of and comply with all WWCT policies and procedures
Other
As the Trust is a small employer with limited resources it is necessary that all staff work together flexibly and occasionally undertake work which is outside of their specific job description and across all aspects of the Trust’s work to ensure the site is managed well and efficiently. All staff should undertake work requested of them by the Trust Manager wherever possible.
The course is open 364 days a year and there needs to be staff on duty each day. The post holder will be required to work on Bank Holidays and weekends in rota pattern. The Trust will work with the team of staff to ensure cover is shared and may adapt different patterns of work to be fair to all members of the team.
Skills and Attributes which are:
Essential in the postholder
- 5 years experience of maintaining/managing golf courses
- A regular golf player
- Experience of public green space maintenance
- NVQ Level 2 in Horticulture (or equivalent)
- Evidence of recent learning
- Problem solving, using initiative
- The experience of working to tight budgets
- A working knowledge of health and safety as it relates to public green spaces
- The ability to use a range of mowing equipment
Skills and Attributes which are:
Desirable in the postholder
- NVQ Level 2 in Sports Turf (or equivalent)
- Current qualification in use of chain saw or use of pesticides with knapsack
