Job Title:Charity Shop Manager, Macclesfield

responsible for:Charity Shop Assistants and Volunteers

accountable to:Trading Development Manager

Main purpose

To manage Age UK CheshireEast’s charity shop in Macclesfield, ensuring efficient and effective management of staff, volunteers, premises and stock to provide a high quality retail service and achieve sales targets.

To ensure that all appropriate standards of security and health and safety are met.

Main duties

  1. To maximise shop income and achieve sales targets.
  2. To ensure that the shop premises are clean and tidy at all times and that goods are displayed in an attractive and presentable manner.
  3. To act as keyholder; to open and close the shop for agreed trading hours and ensure that the premises are secure on leaving. To respond to emergency call out if and when necessary.
  4. To supervise and support the Charity Shop Assistants, liaising with them concerning presentation, targets, volunteer rotas etc.
  5. To assist in the recruitment of volunteers and to train, support and supervise the work of the volunteers in the charity shop, encouraging an active interest in the shop and the work of Age UKCheshireEast.
  6. To ensure that the shop is adequately staffed at all times and establish appropriate rotas for staff and volunteers.
  7. To generate stock donations to meet sales requirements; accept, sort, price and display stock in accordance with Age UK CheshireEast’s guidelines.
  8. To maximise gift aid income, ensure that the shop volunteers and staff are trained and promote gift aid at every opportunity.
  9. To take responsibility for stock control, including disposal of unsold or unwanted donations at the best possible return, and liaising with the other shop managers to arrange for transfer of stock.
  10. To work with the Trading Development Manager to:
  • publicise the charity shop;
  • enhance the image of Age UK Cheshire East and incorporate other aspects of the charity’s work within the shop;
  • ensure that all queries about Age UK CheshireEast’s services are answered promptly and, where appropriate, customers are referred to Age UK CheshireEast’s main office and that information held at the shop is up to date;
  • maintain good relations with the public, trade councils, landlords and neighbouring retailers.
  • ensure that any problems in the shop are resolved quickly and effectively.
  • report any incidents or potential incidents in the charity shop’s premises to comply with Age UK Cheshire East’s Health and Safety Policy.
  1. To develop a programme of themed window displays.
  2. To make regular reports to the Trading Development Manager on the performance of the shop and its staff.
  3. To ensure that all Age UK CheshireEast’s administrative and financial procedures are followed including banking, cash register reconciliation, weekly returns and volunteer records.
  4. To assist with maximising Age UK CheshireEast’s fundraising and marketing opportunities, including sales of Age UK insurance products.
  5. To ensure that staff and volunteers are aware of and comply with Age UK Cheshire East’s Health and Safety Policy. To ensure statutory responsibilities are met concerning fire regulations.
  6. To ensure that Age UK CheshireEast’s Equality and Diversity Policy is adhered to.
  7. Any other duties which are consistent with the duties and responsibilities of the post.

other features of the job

The postholder will be expected to work a 37.5 hour week and normal hours will be
9.00am – 5.00pm, with half an hour for lunch, five days each week which will normally include Saturday. Some flexibility in the working hours will be required from time to time.

The postholder will be expected to travel for training purposes, to collect donations, and to cover other retail premises within Cheshire East when required. Travel expenses will be paid.

The annual leave entitlement will be 26 working days and all public and bank holidays, where they fall on a normal working day.

Starting Salary: £17,852
