Job Analysis

This job analysis is representative of the position. Section I

Job Summary:

Under direction of the Transportation Director, conduct classroom and behind the wheel training and safety meetings as prescribed by law. Maintain training, testing and driver performance records and prepare related reports. May assist in the investigation of school bus accidents; perform check rides and provide remedial training, coordinate and work with bus drivers in bus evacuation drills. Perform duties of a bus driver when not performing instructor duties.

Essential Functions / Tasks:

  1. Plan, develop, organize and conduct training programs for bus drivers and supervise drivers to ensure that safe driving practices are in adherence to District, State, California Highway Patrol transportation policies, rules and regulations.
  2. Aid, counsel and assist school bus drivers concerning student behavior management and other pupil transportation related problems and situations.
  3. Assist in the selection and the performance evaluation of bus drivers and transportation training personnel.
  4. May drive a bus in emergency situations over a designated route in accordance with a specified time schedule. (See bus driver JA for specific duties.)
  5. Ride with bus drivers and evaluate new bus stops, changes in routes, or driver performance. Provide remedial training as needed.
  6. Participate in the assignment of drivers to maximize the utilization of equipment and personnel.
  7. Prepare various management reports pertaining to student transportation personnel training.
  8. Plan, organize, and supervise the maintenance of bus driver and vehicle mechanic service personnel records, including license and certificated expirations, medical expirations and advance training hours for the renewal of the bus driver certificate.
  9. Plan, develop and supervise the school bus driver certificate renewal training programs.
  10. Conduct safe driving and safe working methods and procedures training programs.
  11. Perform bus inspections with bus drivers and report damage, vandalism, malfunctions and defects.
  12. May be assigned other duties such as Dispatcher. Dispatcher duties involve scheduling the vacant routes, dispatch field trips, answering the phone to locate students for parents or take information from parents, teachers, and drivers that is bus or bus stop related.

Qualifications: Five years of experience operating school buses in the transportation of regular and special needs students; supervisory training and/or experience that could provide the desired knowledge and abilities. Graduation from California School Bus Driver Instructor course.
