Job Title:Black MSM Sexual Health Co-ordinator

Contract length:12 months possible extension

Salary: £25,000pro rata (£20,000 per year based on 4 days per week)

Hours:28 hours per week (4 days per week)

Based: Naz Project London

Accountability &

Supervision: Head of Programmes

Purpose:
To develop and deliver a culturally competent sexual health promotionand STI/HIV prevention service, referral and information service for men who have sex with men (MSM) from a Black African, Black British, Afro-Caribbean or other Black background, including dual heritagein London with a specific focus on Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Promote access and referrals to HIV testing and reduce the late diagnosis.
  2. Improve access to primary care, GUM and other health services for young MSM from a Black African, Black British, Afro-Caribbean or other Black background, including dual heritage.
  3. Engage with MSMsat risk and who are not currently accessing services through innovative and proactive strategies.
  4. Reduce isolation of Black African, Black British, Afro-Caribbean or other Black background, including dual heritageMSMby facilitating focus group discussion, peer model activities into services that will promote their health and wellbeing and enable them to establish social and support mechanism.
  5. Deliver outreach on SAFER partnership community mobilising work
  6. Train 10-12 peer educators for the implementation of the project
  7. Supervise volunteers including assigning duties and any required support.
  8. To disseminate relevant health promotion materials and information through effective publicity and promotion of the project.
  9. To respond to general requests for advice and information on HIV/STIs forthe Black MSM community.
  10. To prepare work plans and quarterly monitoring reports on project progress on reaching agreed targets and outcomes.
  11. To liaise with African and African-Caribbean community based organisations (CBOs) to raise awareness about Homophobia, HIV and AIDS and seek their involvement in educational and prevention work.
  12. Implement the project policies and procedures.
  13. To undertake additional duties as might reasonably be requested by the Head of Programmes.

Circumstances

/ Positively identify as aman from a Black African, Black British, Afro-Caribbean, or other Black background, including dual heritage; who is also gay, bisexual or otherwise MSM.
(Exempt under the Equality Act 2010 Schedule 9, Part 1)
Able to work some evenings and occasional weekends

Skills, Trainings

& Knowledge / A working knowledge of different statutory and voluntary agencies that have an interest in sexual health promotion and HIV Prevention
Writing and presenting reports of work undertaken.
Providing support and training for individuals and groups representing their communities
Good organisational and co-ordinating skills.
Keyboard and word processing skills. / Knowledge of CCG’s, public health, primary care and community sexual health services (GUM).
Facilitation of workshops, meetings and events.
Familiarity withimmigration legislation in relation to accessing statutory HIV prevention, GUM and social care services.
Ability to speak at least one African language besides English.
Experience and
Understanding / Understanding of sexual health,HIVand social needs of Black MSM living in London
Understanding of legislation that impacts on access to primary care services.
An interest in good sexual health promotion.
Outreach work/community development work with marginalized groups.
An understanding of the principles of sexual health and health promotion and how these relate in practice.
An understanding of the cultural diversity of African and Caribbean cultural values and experience of working with different cultural groups and perspectives. / Working knowledge of statutory and voluntary sector organisations.
Participatory approaches to working with people who are Black African, Black British, Afro-Caribbean or from another other Black background, including dual heritage; or with local communities.
Direct experience of interacting with LGBT communities in a work situation or as friends.
