Job Title: Band and Instrumental Music Instructor -- A.R.M.E.S. Gifted and Talented Program

The A.R.M.E.S. program (Art Reaching Middle and Elementary Students) is a state funded Gifted andTalented after-school program for 3th through 8th grade students through the Fine Arts Center (F.A.C.). Thepurpose of the program is to allow talented students to explore their chosen art form in depth whilepromoting individual creativity in dance, music, theatre and visual arts. Students are selected to attendbased on a nomination and audition process and taught by professional artists. A.R.M.E.S. studentsattend class in the afternoons twice a week across five weekdays from September to mid-May.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Teach gifted woodwinds, brass and/or percussion students in Grades 6-8 in a non-credited after-school program. Position may focus on teaching winds & brass or percussion depending upon the specialty of the candidate.
  2. Design and implement an innovative curriculum that combines teaching proven fundamental techniques in instrumental performance with inspiring student engagement.
  3. Participate in recruiting, promoting and auditioning for the A.R.M.E.S.Band and Instrumental Music Program.
  4. Collaborate with the F.A.C. Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion department and district band teachers.
  5. Prepare students to audition into the Fine Arts Center Music Programs.
  6. Support instruction received in students home middle school band program.
  7. Keep attendance records and have all student forms and information organized.
  8. Oversee student behavior before, during and after class to include contacting parents when necessary.
  9. Track individual student progress and write student evaluations periodically.
  10. Maintain classroom equipment and instruments. Manage annual donations/fees for the program.
  11. Assist with functions as directed by the A.R.M.E.S. Coordinator and the Fine Arts Center Director.
  12. Responsible for two weekend recitals and dress rehearsals (at a minimum) per year.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Music Education and/or Music Performance from an accredited college or university is preferred. Bachelor’s Degree in Music with significant educational experience and professional accomplishment will also be considered.
  • Proven academic and professional achievement in the candidate’s field
  • Minimum 3 year teaching experience at K-12 school level. Course work in teaching beginning orearly-advanced level students to include some combination of woodwinds, brass and/or percussion is required.
  • Excellent communication and computer skills to include demonstrated use of social/new media.

The Fine Arts Center (F.A.C.)

Established in 1974, the Fine Arts Center (F.A.C.) is South Carolina’s first secondary school for gifted students in the literary, visual and performing arts. As an application based school of 400 students, F.A.C.operates within the Greenville County’s public school system. Students are able to study architecture,creative writing, dance, filmmaking, music, theatre or the visual arts with a faculty of practicing artists.F.A.C.’s 2015-2016 graduating class of 102 students earned over 10.2 million dollars in scholarships andenrolled in over 40 different colleges and universities. Approximately, 30% of these studentsparticipated in the A.R.M.E.S. Program.
