General Information:

  • Your job asa Personal Assistant is to assist the disabled person to meet their personal, social and domestic needs and any other day-to-day requirements or activities;
  • Through your support as a Personal Assistant, the disabled person is able to lead an individual, independent and active life, in his or her own home or within the community;
  • You should always ask what the disabled person’s needs are and listen and act upon their requests and directions;
  • If employed you will be asked to provide two suitable references.

Job Description

Personal Assistant to a Young Disabled Man

Job Purpose:

Bright, enthusiastic and strong personality wanted to oversee young man and keep him happy, safe & entertained. The client is a bubbly and energetic football fan in his 20s with learning disability and communication issues. He has a loving family who will be available to provide training and guidance for the role.

Special needs trained welcome although full training will be given £9.75per hour.

Location: Clapham North

Hours: 10 hours over Monday-Wednesday

Rate of pay: £9.75 per hour

Main tasks:

  • Personal care such as dressing, bathing, toileting.
  • Use of hoisting to help client get in and out of bed.
  • Oral and peg feeding.
  • Interactive play.
  • Going out in the community.

Meeting the client’s needs:

The family of the disabled person is the person best qualified to know what their needs are. Therefore it is important you are able to follow the guidance given by the family and work together with them to meet their needs.

If necessary, practical training and guidance will be provided by the employer.

Person Specification

Personal Assistant to a Young Disabled Man

This person spec will be used to shortlist candidates for interview. Please use your personal statement and application form to provide evidence as to how you meet each of the criteria.

Essential:

  • Experience providing support to a disabled person. In particular experience with learning disability would be an advantage but other relevant experience will be considered.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Willingness to follow guidance by the family
  • Able to work independently and show initiative when required
  • Willingness to encourage and take part in activities with the client
  • Reliable and trustworthy
  • Able to understand and maintain confidentiality
  • Willingness to learn the tasks of the role
  • Patient and non-judgemental approach
  • Commitment to equal opportunities for disabled people in attitude and in carrying out the tasks of the job.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Arrive at the agreed time ready to work
  • Give notice if you are going to be more than ten minutes late
  • Respect the privacy of the person you are working for and maintain a professional approach at all times, being careful to treat your working relationships as confidential, including the assistance provided
  • Understand and be mindful of the disabled person’s right to dignity, respect and independence
  • Communicate and discuss any problems that arise as soon as possible
  • Respect your employer’s possessions and equipment and only use the telephone, television, radio, fridge etc with appropriate consent
