To take a leading role within the IHSE in directing its medical education research output and the professional development of the academic team. This includes securing and managing funding for research; supporting other researchers in education research; disseminating project outcomes in a variety of formats to meet the needs of different stakeholders, including peer-reviewed papers in high quality journals, and ultimately ensuring we are able to independently make a medical education Research Exercise Framework submission.
To make significant contributions to:
·  Developing, delivering and expanding the Institute’s portfolio of research.
·  Supervising postgraduate researchers at doctoral level, master’s and undergraduate projects.
·  Developing and delivering the Institute’s intercalated and postgraduate degrees in Medical Education and supporting related initiatives.
·  Mentoring of colleagues.
·  Liaising and effectively collaborating with pertinent teams outside CME/IHSE: within QMUL and more widely depending on the applicant’s research interest, and the developing expertise of the Institute.

Qualifications / PhD in education or equivalent qualification/experience
Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (or equivalent), Principal Fellowship would be desirable.
International reputation in research in a field of education pertinent to health professions’ education

Experience of working within health professions education
Evidence of interpersonal, organisational and leadership skills in administration related to educational research
Successful experience in writing applications for research grants, obtaining funding and application to research in Medical Education
Experience in presenting research at international conferences, writing research papers that are published in international journals and/or other forms of international research dissemination
Internationally recognised expert on one or more aspects of the subject as evidenced by publications, citations of publications and invitations to participate in research-related activities (e.g. collaboration in research applications, conferences, publications) / E

Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Role
The main duties and responsibilities of the role will encompass the educational research leadership both within and outwith QMUL. In particular there will be a major role in supporting staff in carrying out their own research and developing the Institute’s research focus.
To undertake such teaching, administrative, managerial and other duties as are reasonably to be expected of a senior member of academic staff, as agreed with the Centre Lead and Institute Director
Working Environment (knowledge of special working practices, breadth of management skill required, customer impact, responsibility, efficiency)
Apply knowledge and experience of education theory, practice and research to advise and guide IHSE and SMD staff, to inform policy decisions and to support SMD education programmes and courses. Support IHSE staff with their research and writing for publication.
Research
1.  Obtain new knowledge by theoretical and/or practical methods. Engage actively in research at a high level in a particular subject area.
2.  Ensure appropriate dissemination of research to a national or international audience by scholarly publication or other outputs appropriate to the relevant academic discipline.
3.  Monitor research findings with a view to commercial exploitation, and to inform the Institute Director and Head of Innovation and Enterprise of any appropriate novel research outcomes.
Teaching
1.  Contribute to innovations in teaching and learning through the development of teaching materials, of forms of pedagogy, or of appropriate teaching collaborations
1.  Administration & Management Carry out such Institute and/or College administrative tasks as may be required by the Head of Centre for Medical Education and Director of IHSE
2.  Comply with relevant College policies and regulations regarding financial matters, harassment, equal opportunities, public interest disclosure, health and safety, intellectual property, data protection or any other rules, regulations or codes binding on the member of staff.
3.  Participate in the College Appraisal Scheme (QMPAS) and demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development.
4.  Undertake such other reasonable duties as may be required by the Head of Centre for Medical Education and Director of IHSE from time to time.

3.  Use experience and knowledge (and an understanding of students’ backgrounds and abilities) to design , deliver and assess teaching and learning

Communication & Networking (liaison with others, type and level of communications)
Research
·  Collaborate with colleagues in research activities, where appropriate, within the IHSE, internally within Queen Mary and externally with other Higher Education Institutes and/or non-academic organisations.
·  Prepare and present papers and other research outputs relating to the field in national and international seminars, conferences, workshops and other events.
Admin & Mgt
·  Attend Centre for Medical Education and Director of IHSE meetings as required as well other relevant College meetings and boards, as agreed with the Head of Centre for Medical Education and Director of IHSE
With staff at Queen Mary within SMD:
1.  Interact with research collaborators, in order to achieve research objectives and generate outputs (e.g. publications, presentations).
2.  Liaise with academic colleagues over collaborative teaching, orally and in writing, in order to ensure efficient and successful course delivery as appropriate.
3.  Liaise with, instruct and support part-time staff who contribute to SMD teaching programmes through written communication, formal and informal oral discussions and appraisal. Both preceding and during term time.
4.  Contribute to groups such as Staff Student Liaison Committee, or Teaching and Learning Committee.
With staff at Queen Mary outside the SMD:
·  Liaise with other administrative Department/Centre/Institutes in the College in order to support effective research, (eg Research Grants Administration and the Joint Research Office), teaching (eg. Information Services, Learning Disabilities Support Group or the Registry), and knowledge transfer (e.g. Innovation and Enterprise regarding Intellectual Property protection, exploitation and other Knowledge Transfer).
With students:
1.  Support, teach, advise and facilitate the learning of students in formal teaching sessions (e.g. lectures, seminars, fieldwork, tutorials, and one-to-one supervision) to help them achieve their best potential. Oral instruction, discussion, advice and response, written notes, questions, comments and feedback in a variety of media. Both in term time, and to a more limited extent, out of term time. Capacity to act as personal tutor to students.
With external contacts:
2.  Establish links with academic-related organisations, particularly the Institute for Education, UCLP, NE London LETB, and the London LETBs’ Shared Services as well as publishers, journals, research councils, charities and other HEIs, in order to:
·  Edit and review scholarly journals
·  Act as member of peer review panels and colleges
·  Collaborate with external colleagues on research projects, in the UK and abroad
·  Administer research networks
·  Organise collaborative conferences
Develop relationships with external organisations to maximise opportunities for Knowledge Transfer, for example:
·  External teaching collaborations
·  Student placements with external organisations
·  Consultancy or policy advice given to business, professional bodies, government or regulatory bodies, not-for-profit organisations, or other users of research
Finance/Resource Management (budgeting, forecasting)
Be part of the BSc Medical Education team responsible for resource and financial management. Seek opportunities to increase IHSE external income through faculty development and teaching.
Research
Submit, singly or jointly with colleagues, proposals to funding bodies (including research councils, government departments, private sector and public sector collaborators) for the financial support of research and manage those grants as appropriate.
Responsible for obtaining income and managing own research funds
People Management (supervisory responsibility, human relations skills)
Take pastoral responsibility for students in the SMD, as assigned and to support students in key aspects of personal development planning and the acquisition of relevant skills.
Research
·  Support and supervise the work of research students as appropriate.
·  Support, supervise and direct others as necessary (such as research assistants, technicians [where applicable] and postgraduate research students) to maximise the research activity and outputs.
Teaching
·  Supervise new teachers as may be required.
