DESCRIPTION

This is work compiling data pertaining to size, content, condition, and other characteristics of forest tracts; training and leading forest workers in forest propagation, fire prevention and suppression. Incumbents may assist in managing, improving, and protecting rangelands and wildlife habitats, in the development and implementation of environmental studies and practices, and help provide technical assistance regarding the conservation of soil, water, and related natural resources.

Some positions in this occupation may be responsible for coordinating work and supervising employees.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Supervises employees by assigning work, reviewing progress and assessing performance.

Participates in forestation and reforestation projects.

Helps investigate the adaptability of different tree species to new environmental conditions, such as soil type, climate and altitude.

Assists in determining methods of cutting and removing timber with minimum waste and environmental damage.

Assists in researching forest propagation and culture affecting tree growth rates, yield, and duration and seed production, growth viability, and germination of different species.

Assists in analyzing forest conditions to determine reason for prevalence of different variety of trees.

Studies classification, life history, light and soil requirements and resistance to disease and insects of different tree species.

Maps forest areas and estimates standing timber and future growth.

Assists in managing tree nurseries and thins forest to encourage natural growth of sprouts or seedlings of desired varieties.

Participates in environmental studies and prepares environmental reports.

Assists in planning and implementing projects for control of floods, soil erosion, tree diseases, infestation, and forest fire.

Employs techniques for measuring and identifying trees.

Assists in suppression of forest fires.

Conducts public educational programs on forest care and conservation.

Responds to special directions and instructions during emergency operations.
