Purpose of job
  • To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English
  • To support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission

Context and environment
The teaching operation in Bangladesh increasingly needs to take its products/courses closer to its customers, given the population growth in urban centres. Consequently, in Dhaka alone, we operate from 3 centres and teachers will typically teach in any of our centres/branches depending on the term and any of the products we offer, and both on and off site.
Teaching operations are also being restarted in Sylhet and Chittagong. Teaching in Sylhet will be mainly around IELTS Train the Trainer Workshops. The number of working days will comprise of 4 working days(2 IELTS Train the Trainer workshops) plus any say needed for pre-course briefings.

Responsibilities
  • Ensuring teaching meets learner needs and expectations
  • Ensuring teaching meets Teaching Quality standards and organisational expectations
  • Maintaining good relationships with customers and colleagues
  • Supporting the teaching centre’s activities and British Council plans

Main duties
1 / Plan, prepareand deliver high quality English language teaching that meets the needs of different customer groups taking into account individual learning styles

Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students’ performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy

Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials and related services, in order to meet students’ needs by actively working as a member of the teaching team

Complete teaching related administrative tasks to specified standards

5 / Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning, and maintain British Council’s position at the forefront of best ELT practices
6 / Contribute to the development of lasting, mutually beneficial relationships by enhancing students’ understanding of contemporary UK

Support local marketing and promotional strategy, and assist the teaching centre team in delivering excellent customer service

The teaching centre is a 7-day multi on and off site operation. Flexibility and readiness to meet the changing/needs of the operation is an essential requirement of the job - for example teaching until 2130 is common.

Skills and Knowledge / Teaching Skills – level 1 = essential (centres can determine level if more experience required)
  • Classroom management (1) - The ability to plan, control and facilitate interaction in the classroom that is appropriate to the activity and promotes learning and takes into account different needs and abilities of learners and demonstrates an awareness of Equal Opportunities and Diversity issues.
  • Course and lesson planning (1) - The ability to prepare courses and individual lessons that fulfill course objectives, employ appropriate methodology and meet learners’ needs. In addition, lessons demonstrate cultural awareness and reflect the diversity of host country and UK.
  • Subject knowledge (1) - This refers to the ability to analyse and describe language systems (lexis, discourse, grammar and phonology) and language use (through spoken and written text) and the ability to communicate this knowledge effectively and in ways appropriate to the learners.
  • Understanding your learners (1) - This refers to the understanding that a teacher demonstrates towards their learners and of the learning process.
  • Learning technologies (1) - The ability to integrate Learning technologies into everyday classroom practice to enhance language learning.

Experience / 2 years post-certificate i.e. CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL experience
Experience in teaching relevant age groups :
  • Adults General English 18+ (800+ hours)
  • IELTS Preparation Course (800+ hours)
