Job description – Teaching Assistant

Job Title: Teaching Assistant

Hours: 31 hours

Status: Temporary until end of Term 6 2018

Salary : Kent Scale 3

Responsible to: Inclusion Manager

Headteacher

All support staff in schools make a strong contribution to pupils’ learning and achievement. Teaching Assistants provide support to teachers and schools allowing qualified teachers to make even more effective use of their time, professional knowledge, skills and understanding. Teaching Assistants contribute to pupils’ learning and will have a significant impact on pupils’ achievement.

PURPOSE OF JOB

To support the class teacher in the teaching and welfare of children, working within the classroom to support the needs of all children

To work across the School where required

To support identified groups of children in learning initiatives and social skills

To support colleagues in covering classes

To support children during play-times

To support children during lunchtimes

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

A. SUPPORTING THE SCHOOL

·  To be aware of School policies and procedures and follow the School ethos.

·  To be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security and confidentiality reporting all concerns to an appropriate person to ensure pupils’ well-being.

·  To attend relevant meetings, and keep up to date with the day-to-day work of the School.

·  To develop a knowledge of Literacy, Mathematics, ICT and the other curriculum areas.

·  To support colleagues who cover absence for class teachers.

·  To identify personal/professional development needs for continuing professional development (CPD - internal/external).

·  To liaise with teaching and non-teaching staff with regard to preparation for, and working within, lessons.

·  To respect the confidentiality of sensitive information divulged by staff, parents/carers and pupils.

B. SUPPORTING THE TEACHER

·  To support teachers in their delivery of the differentiated curriculum.

·  To assist teachers in observing and assessing individual pupils.

·  To identify or design suitable teaching materials.

·  To provide regular feedback about children’s progress.

·  To liaise between pupil and teacher where appropriate.

·  To assist in the implementation of pupils’ ILPs.

·  Provide clerical/admin support (e.g. typing, photocopying, display, collection and recording of money etc.).

·  To undertake basic record-keeping in respect of pupil learning, behaviour management, child protection etc. as directed in order to support the teacher in delivering the learning programmes set for each child.

C. SUPPORTING THE PUPIL

·  To establish a supportive and trusting relationship with pupils.

·  To be aware of pupils’ individual needs and the strategies most useful for addressing them.

·  To help pupils access the content of a lesson by providing differentiated material and/or clarification and explanation.

·  To motivate pupils and build up their self-esteem.

·  To help with the recording of work.

·  To encourage and keep on task those who find it difficult to concentrate.

·  To help pupils develop organisation skills and become independent learners.

·  To contribute to review meetings and monitoring procedures.

·  To liaise with outside agencies and parents/carers.

·  To work on a one-to-one/group basis with pupils as appropriate and help them to meet their individual targets.

·  To ensure the children are able to use equipment and materials provided.

·  To encourage acceptance and inclusion of children with AEN.

·  To meet the physical and sensory needs of children as required whilst encouraging independence.

·  To support gifted and talented/more able children.

Person Specification – Teaching Assistant

Criteria
Qualifications / ·  GCSE English and Maths at Grade C or above (or equivalent)
·  NVQ 2 for Teaching Assistants or equivalent – desirable but not essential
·  Graduate - desirable but not essential
Experience / ·  Working with or caring for children of a relevant age to those in the school
Skills and abilities / ·  Team working skills: ability to be an integral flexible member of the staff team
·  Ability to provide a caring and structured learning environment for pupils.
·  Able to work under supervision of the class teacher and SENCO.
·  Able to reinforce teaching points during teacher input;
·  Communications skills: able to explain and problem-solve
·  Flexible approach; able to respond to individual pupil needs.
·  Promote a positive ethos and be good role model.
·  Interpersonal skills: able to liaise sensitively and effectively with the class teacher, SENCO and parents recognising TA’s role in pupils' learning.
·  Able to constantly improve own practice/knowledge through self-evaluation and learning from others.
·  Ability to observe and report on pupil performance.
·  Organizational skills: ability to contribute to the planning and evaluation of learning activities.
·  Ability to prepare resources to support learning programmes
·  Basic ICT skills, use of computer, digital camera and photocopier.

·  Understanding of the relevant policies/codes of practice and awareness of relevant legislation in the context of TA role
·  General understanding of national/foundation stage curriculum and other relevant learning programmes/strategies
