POSITION DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Executive Director

GENERAL PURPOSE

The Executive Director is the face of the Chamber to the public. The Executive Director performs a variety of supervisory, administrative, and professional work tasks as directed by the board or to aid various Chamber committees, boards, work groups, and events under minimal supervision.

Works under the general guidance and direction of the Norwalk Area Chamber of Commerce Chair, Executive Committee, and Board of Directors

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

As necessary and needed for all events in coordination with volunteers and other organizations to achieve the goals of the Norwalk Area Chamber of Commerce.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Regularly interacts with members and others in the community with professionalism and courtesy. Manages the direction of all membership efforts of the Chamber including retention of current members and solicitation of new members. Answers telephone and greet members and visitors, applicants and members of the community who come into the Chamber office with courtesy.

Regularly Attends work at the designated time and place. Maintains Chamber business hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Regular office hours shall be determined by the Executive Director with necessary closures for lunchtime, holidays, and other Chamber business and events.

Regularly exercises independent discretion under the supervision of the Board of Directors and Chair in the facilitation of accurate communication throughout the Chamber through various means and organizes and manages properly the day-to-day activities of the Chamber office and ensures the efficiency of the Chamber’s operations, through constant attention to promoting a positive environment and confidentiality when required.

Regularly exercises independent discretion under the supervision of the Board of Directors and Chair in the creation, maintenance and updating of the official Chamber website and any social media pages on a daily basis or as needed.

Regularly exercises independent discretion under the supervision of the Board of Directors and Chair in the planning and implementation of events for the benefit of the Chamber and its members as necessary and directed by the Board.

Regularly exercises independent discretion under the supervision of the Board of Directors and Chair in the creation, direction, and implementation of all advertising for the Chamber.

Regularly handles word processing and spreadsheet assignments, desktop publishing, and other software. Provides accurate clerical support for the Chamber committees, boards, events, etc. and maintains the general Chamber calendar, including arrangements, schedules, notices, meetings, minutes, and agendas.

Regularly exercises independent discretion under the supervision of the Board of Directors and Chair in the creation and implementation of the Chamber’s annual budget. Works with the treasurer to get bills paid and deposits are recorded in the appropriate accounting software in a timely fashion. The Executive Director will also make timely deposits for the Chamber and not hold checks/money.

Performs related work as required and necessary to achieve the goals of the Chamber.

Must be able to follow and understand safety rules and regulations.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

(A) College graduate, B.A./B.S., or equivalent educational certification and;

(B)  Five to ten (5-10) years of proven experience in a growth-oriented community or business with a proven performance record, or

(C)  Any equivalent combination of education and experience, with additional education substituting on a year for year basis for the required experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

(A)  A general knowledge of the operations of the Norwalk Chamber Office, its members, and the Norwalk Community.

(B)  Strong human relations, analytical and communication skills; skill in the operation of the listed tools and equipment.

(C)  Ability to coordinate complex programs involving multiple jurisdictions, multiple programs and diverse interests; ability to analyze complex problems and recommend comprehensive solutions; ability to make decisions, recognizing established practices and use resourcefulness and tact in solving problems.

(D)  Ability to plan and organize work for the accomplishment of objectives; ability to prepare clear, concise and accurate reports, both orally and in writing.

(E)  Demonstrated ability to follow a management philosophy that is input oriented and values problem solving and the development of partnerships; demonstrated ability

to work effectively as a member of a team.

(F)  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with businesses, city, state, and federal officials, representatives of other agencies, Chamber members and the general public; ability to establish effective working relationships with businesses, city, state, and federal officials, representatives of other agencies, Chamber members and the general public; ability to prepare and analyze comprehensive and technical reports and data.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Valid Iowa State Driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Personal computer, including word processing software; motor vehicle; phone; copy and fax machine.

Work is performed mostly in office settings. Some outdoor work is required for many event set up and tear down. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear; sit; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand or walk.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability

to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office and moderate in the field.
