The post is based in the Communications Team, part of the External Relations Department.

Main function:The Media Manager is responsible for the development and implementation of a fully integrated and strategic media relations and social media vision for the Alliance. S/he will provide comprehensive media relations support to internal stakeholders (including senior staff in Linking Organisations) to raise awarenessof and promote the Alliance’s programmes and policy work. S/he will provide a first class media relations service to journalists and other media representatives and ensure the delivery of consistent brand messaging.

S/he is also responsible for the Key Correspondent Programme, a vibrant network of more than 70 citizen journalists based around the world, and the line management of the Editor and Co-ordinator: Key Correspondent Programme.

Location:Hove Office (or other local office as appropriate).

Travel:Occasional International Travel.

Responsibilities:

1.Media & social media strategy

Objective: to develop a framework for engagement with traditional and new media in the context of the wider organisational Positioning Strategy

  • In collaboration with the Director of External Relations, Head of Team: Communications, Publishing Manager and other senior Alliance staff, identify key areas to be included in the secretariat media relations & social media strategy
  • Develop written strategies around key organisational moments – such as World AIDS Day or advocacy campaign activities- with a group of key internal stakeholders
  • Ensure cohesion between media messaging and the organisational positioning strategy, vision and values
  • Ensure the media relations and social media strategy is disseminated effectively throughout the Alliance global partnership
  • Offer leadership and advice on appropriate media strategies, techniques and tone, to the Executive Director, Director of External Relations, other members of SMT and Directors of Linking Organisations, as well as colleagues across the organisation
  • Support the Editor/Coordinator of the Key Correspondent Programme to develop a media & social media strategy for the KC Programme and ensure cohesion with the Alliance’s strategy
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the HIV and AIDS epidemic and responses globally, and the external media environment (UK and international) and an understanding of how best to target our efforts.

2.Proactive and reactive media and PR work

Objective: to raise the profile of the Alliance’s work – and of community responses to HIV – with key stakeholders.

  • Implement the secretariat’s media workplan and strategies around key organisational moments
  • Build relationships with key UK and internationalHIV, development and related journalists in print, broadcast and online media to raise the profile of HIV and our work with key UK and international stakeholders
  • Identify, and successfully implement opportunities for proactive media work with existing and new media outlets
  • Manage a media database of contacts (currently Gorkana)
  • Maintain a log of Alliance media coverage, with the support of the Programme Assistant: Communications, and profile this on the Alliance intranet and in other internal fora.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for inputting into comments and debates on HIV and AIDS within the media/social media
  • Raise the profile of the Alliance nationally and internationally
  • Raise the profile of the Alliance within Brighton and Sussex through proactive work with local media and partners
  • Provide media support for external events to raise our profile
  • Support business development and fundraising efforts in media-related activities.
  • Represent the Alliance in external fora as required.

3.Proactive and reactive social media work

Objective: to maintain and update our various social media accounts, measuring success in this area, and liaising with colleagues across the communications team, and other parts of the Alliance

  • Lead on the implementation of the social media strategy, taking full responsibility for maintaining the Alliance’s Twitter and Facebook accounts and for ensuring that LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram are maintained byother colleagues in the communications team
  • Ensure the social media policy remains updated and reflective of developing best practice,and in collaboration with the whole Communications Team, be responsible for managing the reputation of the Alliance within social media networks.

4.Crisis management

Objective: to maintain the reputation of the Alliance and ensure continuity in our programme delivery

  • Play an active role in anticipating, preparing for and implementing media responses to crisis situations, or other situations where there is risk of damage to our reputation, ongoing implementation of our programmes or the wellbeing of employees
  • Ensure the security and media crisis policy remains updated and, as part of the Alliance Crisis Management Team, be responsible for managing the reputation of the Alliance within the media.

5.Key Correspondent Programme

Objective: to develop a framework for increasing the impact of the Key Correspondents programme

  • In collaboration with the Editor/Coordinator: Key Correspondents, identify key areas to be included in the Key Correspondent theory of change and accompanying written strategy and support efforts to scope and/or secure supplemental restricted funding for the programme
  • Support the Editor/Coordinator to develop a theory of change and supporting workplan with a group of key stakeholders, including Field Programmes, Business Development and Policy teams.

6.Writing, editing and content development

Objective: to support development of engaging, accessible, consistent, accurate content that has an impact with key stakeholders

  • Write and edit press releases, news stories, features, case studies and interviews to support organisational communications, website, e-bulletins, social media and media work
  • Working in collaboration with the Publishing Manager, manage the news area and media centre of the website, ensuring it is accessible, engaging and up to date
  • In collaboration with other teams, develop organisational messages for specific audiences.

7.Line management

  • Line management and development of the Editor/Coordinator: Key Correspondent Programme.

8.Budget responsibility

  • Responsible for management of media, social media and Key Correspondent Programme budget.

9.Other support

  • Provide support to the Head of the Communications Team
  • Other communications activities as required to support the work of the communications team and the communications needs of the wider Alliance.

Person Specification:
Media Manager
Essential / Desirable
Education/knowledge / Graduate level qualification or equivalent experience / Post graduate qualification in media relations, journalism or public relations
Computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office / Familiar with working for the NGO sector
Knowledge of HIV, AIDS and development
Experience / Very significant experience of working with a broad range of print, broadcast and digital media
Experience developing an organisational media & social media strategy.
Experience of working with a broad range of social media (Twitter, FaceBook, LinkedIn) and ensuring these support wider communications and policy strategies
Well established contacts and relationships with journalists and media
Experience working with complex and sensitive information
Excellent writing skills for a range of audiences
Proven ability to represent organisation in a range of fora, including media interviews.
Experience of working in a changing and demanding environment
Experience of managing staff and budgets / Experience working as a journalist or in a media organisation.
Experience working within an NGO
Established contacts with HIV, health, development and international journalists/influential blogging websites
Experience commissioning multi-media content (ie video, podcast, memes, infographics)
Abilities & skills / Very strong oral and written communications skills.
Ability to express complex ideas simply and engagingly.
Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to influence and persuade. / Skills in other languages would be an asset
Strong attention to detail.
