The organization is looking for self-driven individuals who want to exercise their abilities and knowledge out of heart to serve children and the community, for the following Internship Opportunityto be based in the Emali Office.

Position:Design and Marketing Consultant, Programs Department.

We are seeking to fill the above forthcoming position with a person of high marketing and design acumen and/or knowledge of the crafts business, keen and self-motivated to work with a craft development project that benefits families and children. The position is subject to anticipated donor funding.

General Description of the Role:

The Maka Emali Design and Marketing Advisor will be responsible forSupporting Maka Emali craft group by prospecting and securing craft markets from national, regional and international markets, and assist them to develop and maintain good relationships with market agencies/representatives.

POSITION PURPOSE

Assist the MaKa Emali Project Leaders to:

  1. Identify new market opportunities.
  2. Sustain new and existing market relationships.
  3. Managecustomer orders and procurement process.
  4. Support the Maka Emali shop with customer service, display, roster (staff and craft items)

As well you will assist by:

  1. Facilitate the establishment of a MaKa Emali Advisory group to convene quarterly to offer support to the group.

SPECIFIC ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Work with the MaKa Emali Project Leaders to:

1. Identify new funding opportunities

1.1 Support non-farm income streams, mainly targeting women, througha craft development initiative, working withMaka Emali Project leaders (President, Secretary, Production Manager, Finance Manager and Marketing Manager).

1.2. Build up and maintain a solid understanding of Maka Emali (i.e. vision, mission, sectors, themes, approaches, programs, projects) and optimize the use of this information and knowledge in day to day fundraising activities. Fundraising activities include product sales, applying for grants or marketing scholarships, and in-kind support.

1.3Implement amarketing strategy as agreed with ChildFund Kenya and the MaKa Emali Advisory Group.

1.4Assist with guidance on policies, financial guidance, connections, training, risk management, design and shop development etc

1.5Establish Maka Emali advisory group, identify capable volunteers and ensure the group meeting every quarter.

1.6Work to the business plan (as identified in the Support Plan) and provide additional training on computer/social media

2. Coordinate Craft market linkages

2.2 Oversight of the ‘income generation pipeline’ - keep track of payments and market opportunities that arise, the progress of each order, workload spikes and bottlenecks, clashes and deadlines, and agree on workload allocations to ensure that all deadlines are met with maximum efficiency.

3. Building and maintaining Market relationships

3.1 Develop positive relationships with representatives of current and potential craft customers, supporting Maka Emali affiliate Groups and Maka Emali leaders to do the same.

3.2 Ensure the coordination and collation of market intelligence from all contacts.

3.3. Assist MaKa Emali executive team to engage ongoing business support.

4. Build the 5 C’s of Craft Marketing

Grow the Capacity, Capability, Concepts, Connections and Confidence of the MaKa Emali leaders to ensure that they are able to manage the business without external assistance.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

ESSENTIAL

  • Advanced degree ineconomics, business, marketingor other relevant subject
  • Understanding of the retail and export market – how orders are commissioned, made and processed
  • Understanding of basic book-keeping procedures
  • Experience of working as part of a team, sharing ideas and working together with others towards a common outcome
  • Ability to manage own workload and juggle competing priorities in order to meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and oral
  • The social skills and presence to communicate credibly
  • Have a good eye for style and design flair for producing high quality written work
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • A high degree of diplomacy, tact and confidence
  • Able to initiate, develop and maintain communications
  • Highly numerate with excellent analytical ability
  • Willing to live in a rural community in Emali and travel regularly within the community.
  • Knowledge of the donor expectations.
  • Knowledge of MS office and quick books.
  • Knowledge of the craft business would be advantageous but not essential.
