JOB DESCRIPTION – FRONT OF HOUSE ASSISTANTS (fixed term)

Responsible to: Head of Customer Services; Café Manager; House Manager, Deputy House Managers, Bar Supervisor and eight Supervisor
Purpose of post
Front of House Assistants provide excellent care, attention and service to all customers of the Octagon Theatre. Working as part of a large and flexible team they sell food, drink and merchandise and usher audiences in the auditorium.
The nature of post is that it is flexible to the needs and demands of the audience, and therefore Front of House Assistants may work across any of three functions: café service, bar service, shop service and ushering. Some Front of House Assistants will also be trained to work in the kitchen and prepare food.
When on duty the Front of House Assistants work under the supervision of either the Café Manager or House Manager (or deputy) eight Supervisor or Bar Supervisor depending on their assigned tasks.
Hours and pattern of work
Shifts patterns include day time, afternoon to evening, and evenings, covering both weekdays and weekends. Minimum shift is 3.5 hours.
For this position we need someone who is able to work 2-3 shifts a week or more on a rota system. This would include some evening working as well as Saturday
Individual’s availability would be discussed at interview.
Duties and responsibilities
Café service
• Preparing and serving food and drinks
• Stocking the chilled display units with produce and rotating stock
• Table service to include serving hot meals, clearing and setting tables
• Dish washing and polishing
• Cleaning down tables, worktops, surfaces and floor.
• Cashing up till and reconciling sales
• Adhere to Health and Safety practice, particularly food hygiene and safe methods of working
• Ensure that relevant checks and logs such as temperature checks and cleaning schedules are completed on every shift
Shop and Bar service – bar and confectionary
• Preparing the bar and stock for opening
• Serving soft and alcoholic drinks, hot drinks and ambient snacks at the bar counter
• Serving soft drinks, ice creams and confectionary, and merchandise
• Glass collecting, dish washing and polishing
• Cleaning down tables, worktop, surfaces and floor
• Cashing up till and reconciling sales
Ushering
• Checking customer tickets and directing people to their seats
• Admitting latecomers into the auditorium and assisting people to safely enter and exit when a performance is in progress
• Selling programmes, ice creams and merchandise in the auditorium and adjacent area
Events and functions
• Serve drinks and buffets for special events and functions taking place at the theatre
General duties
• Greeting all customers, responding to queries and resolving any customer issues or complaints either independently or with support of manager
• Assist in maintaining high standards of presentation and cleanliness for the building, including litter picking and light cleaning tasks when required
• Assist in the emergency evacuation of the building by directing customers to exits and marshalling the assembly point outside

Rate of pay
· £5.78 for workers aged 16 to 20
· £7.50 for workers aged 21 and above
You will be paid monthly, on the fourth Thursday of each month.
Hours of work Variable. We would aim to provide approx two-three shifts per week
Probation Your employment will be subject to a one month probationary period.
Notice During your probationary period notice will be one week on either side, following which notice will be four weeks on either side.
Holidays You are entitled to the equivalent of 5.6 weeks’ holiday during each holiday year (including all bank holiday entitlements), calculated on a pro rata basis. The Company’s holiday year runs between 1 September and 31 August.
Pension The Octagon Theatre Trust operates an auto-enrolment pension scheme with NOW pensions.
