Job Description for Teaching Assistant (Sports Specialist)

37.5 hours per week

Purpose of post

  • To assist in the support and inclusion of all pupils within the classroom, particularly supporting children with focused work which addresses targets set relating to National Curriculum attainment and Provision Maps
  • To increase pupil fitness through participation in sports and physical activities.

Accountabilities

  • To be responsible to the SENCo with regard to pupil progress
  • To liaise with the head teacher and PE coordinator with regard to pupil fitness

GeneralTeaching Assistant Duties and Responsibilities

  • Establish a supportive relationship with the children.
  • Provide teaching support in small groups and individual children to enable them to access the National Curriculum.
  • Under the direction of the Class Teacher and reporting to the SENCo, deliver learning, behaviour, physical or sensory programmes for children.
  • Liaise with the Class Teacher and SENCo to discuss children’s progress and plan future activities.
  • Assist the Class Teacher and SENCo with observation, monitoring progress in relation to targets and success criteria outlined in Provision Maps
  • Maintain accurate records in line with the school’s Special Educational Needs Policy.
  • Promote positive behaviour, raise self esteem and develop children’s independent learning approaches to assist children’s development.
  • Assist the Class Teacher with the preparation of teaching resources to support effective teaching.
  • Support children’s playtime behaviour and self esteem by encouraging children to take part in playtime games and activities.
  • Assist the Class Teacher and SENCo when liaising with external agencies.
  • Attend weekly Teaching Assistant Meetings.
  • Attend appropriate in-service training.
  • Administer basic first aid.
  • Maintain confidentiality and discretion in relation to information about children and school life and show regard to the school’s Child Protection policy.
  • Cover class during PPA time.
  • Cover class for short-term Class Teacher absences.
  • Assist the Class Teacher with maintaining a clean, purposeful learning environment.
  • Assist the Class Teacher in preparing and mounting displays.

Sports Assistant Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver three school sports clubs each week, working in conjunction with the PE coordinator to ensure clubs offer a good range of opportunities for all pupils.
  • To ensure the school’s sports teams receive good quality coaching, including football, rugby and netball.
  • To promote inter school sports competitions
  • To organise fixtures, team selection, and kit for inter school sports competitions.
  • To be responsible for organising parental permissions, risk assessments and transport arrangements for sporting events at other venues.
  • To coordinate volunteer helpers at sporting events and clubs, ensuring all adults are appropriately safeguarded in line with the school’s Child Protection Policy.

Typical work pattern (subject to negotiated changes)

  • 8.15am to 4.30pm with a morning break and lunch break
