Background and Purpose of the Post
The Breastfeeding Network provides externally accredited training courses in breastfeeding support for breastfeeding mothers, health professionals and other Children’s Centre workers.
Internal Moderation is the process by which BfN quality assures training courses by regularly and systematically sampling and evaluating its assessment practices and decisions, and acting on the findings to ensure consistency and fairness throughout the training cycle from recruiting trainees to awarding certificates.
The Lead Internal Moderation Officer is responsible for coordinating the team carrying out this work and managing the annual review for external quality review.
Main duties and responsibilities
Leading on Internal Moderation
- Work with BfN’s Quality Reviewer to ensure courses are run effectively and that trainees are ready to volunteer promptly
- Process new Course Notification forms and register new trainees with OCN within the required timescale
- Maintain the Training course diary as a record of all training courses within BfN
- Track progress of courses via Excel spreadsheets
- Internally moderate learner portfolios and assessment logs and coordinate support from others as and when required
- Arrange sampling to enable an annual overview of the course
including how assignments map to learning outcomes, word counts, patterns in assessing and standardisation of assessments.
- Upload data and completed reports on to OCNLondon QuartzWeb
- Notify relevant parties of newly qualified Helpers and Supporters once IM is completed satisfactorily
- Train and coordinate the Internal Moderation team and provide on-going support and learning to the IM team and the wider tutor body
- Review internal moderation reports and tutor feedback and work with the internal moderators to finalise the reports
- Manage the External Moderation process by planning the annual visit with OCN’s Centre Moderator,provide reports as part of the annual reviewand meet face to face with the Centre Moderator.
- Report the Centre Moderators’ findings, work with the appropriate stakeholders (internal and external) and report to the relevant sub-committee as required by the management and board
- Update and maintain the Malpractice Policy, ensure compliance, supervise any investigations resulting from an allegation of malpractice and submit a full written report of an investigation along with supporting evidence to OCN London
- Support course development and updating ensuring that learning outcomes and assessment criteria are aligned across and within units and are achievable
- Scope the accreditation and internal moderation requirements for new courses
- Ensure that assessment is appropriate to the credit value and unit level, is consistent, fair and transparent and does not unintentionally discriminate against any learner
Planning, Organisation and Communication
- Coordinate a team of Internal Moderators, review and record the work done by the team and inform payroll of hours worked by the specified deadline
- Manage any complaints or disagreements between tutors, trainees and the IM team and work sensitively to achieve a resolution
Analysis and Data Management
- Produce reports of learners’ evaluations based on the data generated on Survey Monkey and ensure that this information is made available to the tutor and Quality Reviewer at the end of every course to enable any required actions to be taken
- Provide information and support to managers and others as required to enable the continuous development of training

Requirements / Essential / DesirableQualifications
Online learning / Further education qualification in education or learning
A teaching qualification e.g. PTLLS
Qualified BfN Tutor/Supervisor or equivalent breastfeeding peer support training
Breastfeeding Helper Registration with The Breastfeeding Network (BfN)
Breastfeeding Supporter Registration with the BfN
Educated to at least A level standard (equivalent qualifications will be accepted)
Internal Moderation/Quality assurance qualification (or a commitment to complete within 6 months of starting in post) /

Experience and Knowledge
Experience of working with diverse ethnic and social groups
An understanding of the significance of breastfeeding and health education for parents, healthcare professionals and the needs of both families and the professionals who will support them
Ability to communicate with other professionals from a wide range of health and voluntary backgrounds in a professional manner
Experience in assuring the quality of learning and making recommendations to improve the training and curriculum development
Knowledge of the BfN Equality and Diversity Policy and BfN Code of Conduct
Experience of report writing
Experience of providing clear, constructive and specific feedback
Experience of internal Moderation procedures in any context
Experience of assessing students’ written work against agreed standards
Experience of delivering BfN training or similar training
Familiarity with BfN Helper course and BfN Helpline Supporter course materials eg lesson plans /
