Job Description for: Construction Laborers
Perform tasks involving physical labor at residential and commercial building sites. May operate hand and power tools of all types: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, concrete saws, surveying and measuring equipment, small equipment, and bobcat loaders . May clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, erect scaffolding, clean up rubble and debris, and tear out concrete. May assist other craft workers, and take instructions.
Position and secure steel bars or mesh in concrete forms in order to reinforce concrete. Use a variety of fasteners, rod-bending machines and hand tools.
Drive a truck or van with a capacity of less than 26,000 GVW, primarily to deliver or pick up merchandise or to deliver packages within a specified area. May load and unload truck.
WageRange: $9.00 - $16.00 (with insurance benefits)
Job Tasks for:Construction Laborers
- Knowledge of how to check fluid levels on all equipment and vehicles.
- Lubricates and cleans machinery, equipment, and tools.
- Know whereabouts of suppliers and products in St. JosephCounty.
- Read a map.
- Loads and unloads trucks and hauls and hoists materials.
- Erects and disassembles scaffolding, shoring, braces, and other temporary structures.
- Builds and positions forms for pouring concrete and dismantles forms after use, using saws, hammers, nails, or bolts.
- Apply caulking compounds by hand or with caulking gun to seal all types of joints.
- Dig ditches and levels earth to grade specifications, using pick and shovel.
- Grade dirt and concrete efficiently and accurately.
- Signals equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials.
- Grinds, scrapes, sands, or polishes surfaces, such as concrete surfaces for cleaning or finishing, using abrasive tools or machines.
- Mixes concrete and mortar.
- Use power sprayer or washer.
- Care, cleanliness, and organization of form lumber in shop, in truck, and at a job sites.
- Cleans construction site to eliminate possible hazards.
- Cut timbers and/or lumber to specified dimensions, and drill holes in timbers or lumber.
- Hold plumb bobs, sighting rods, and other equipment, to aid in establishing reference points and lines.
- Align, straighten, plumb and square form for installation.
- Construct forms, then assist in raising them to the required elevation.
- Install handrails.
- Drive vehicles with capacities under 26,000 GVW .
- Inspect and maintain vehicle supplies and equipment, such as gas, oil, water, tires, lights, and brakes in order to ensure that vehicles are in proper working condition.
- Load and unload trucks, vans, or automobiles.
- Obey traffic laws, and follow established traffic and transportation procedures.
- Read maps, and follow written and verbal geographic directions.
- Verify the contents of inventory loads against shipping papers.
- Perform emergency repairs such as changing tires or installing light bulbs, fuses, tire chains.
- Report any mechanical problems encountered with vehicles and fill out proper paperwork.
- Report delays, accidents, or other traffic and transportation situations to bases or other vehicles.
- Turn in receipts and money received from deliveries.
- Install and tie rebar and wire mesh.

Class A CDL – Not required but EXTREMELY beneficial.

The physical demands of this position require the ability to demonstrate full range of motion with neck, arms, shoulders, hands, torso, legs and feet. Must be able to lift and carry materials and tools in excess of 50 lbs using abdominal and lower back muscles repeatedly or continuously over time without “giving out” or fatiguing.
