About Tommy’s

Tommy’s was started in 1992 by two obstetricians who were concerned about the lack of funding available to carry out research into pregnancy problems.

In the UK:

·  one in four women loses a baby during pregnancy or birth

·  Around 50,000 babies are born prematurely in the UK each year

·  Around 4,000 babies are stillborn every year in the UK.

Tommy’s funds medical research into the causes and prevention of miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth and provides pregnancy health information to parents-to-be.

We value our volunteers, and we ensure that no volunteer applicant is unfairly treated on any grounds. We recognise that volunteers require satisfying work and we aim to help volunteers meet this need, although we do not introduce volunteers to replace paid employees. Tommy’s staff at all levels work positively with volunteers and, where appropriate, will actively seek to involve them in their work.

We are committed to investing in our volunteers’ development in the work place. So we provide support and training to enable our volunteers to enhance their volunteering work with us, and to broaden their opportunities in the wider community.
