A / JOB TITLE:
Early Childhood Development Officer
B / REPORTING TO:
U6 Coordinator

D / PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Providing on the spot support to U6 centres and monitoring the implementation of under six interventions. The ECD Officer will also be responsible to ensuring the collection and systematic recording of programme relevant data. This is the technical link position between Mary’s Meals and the under six centres as well as stakeholders in ECD services working in the same impact area.

E / Main Duties Include:
  • Undertake monitoring of U6 activities to track progress and resource utilization.
  • Assessing the quality of current ECD activities in the U 6 centres.
  • Ensuring the under six centres working with MM are following the approved curriculum for ECD in Malawi.
  • Develop and implement a MM U6 ECD curriculum in line with prevailing government guidelines.
  • Provide continued coaching and mentoring support to care givers to improve skills of U 6 caregivers.
  • Facilitate school readiness activities in all the under six centres to facilitate smooth transition of children from under six centres to formal schooling.
  • Establish and maintain effective partnerships with other stakeholders in the ECD sector working in the same impact area in order to increase service linkages and ensure sustainability of services.
  • Collect and report essential programme data and support establishment of community managed information management systems.
  • Monitor child development and facilitate referrals to professional assistance where necessary.
  • Promote community resource mobilization to sustain under six services and motivate caregivers.
  • Support caregivers to develop daily instruction and play programmes (lesson plans)
  • Helping caregivers to be familiar and make use of the Child Status Index (CSI)

F / QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • At least a Diploma level qualification in ECD, or a related field.
  • At least three (3) years’ experience working directly with communities on ECD or basic education activities.
  • A clean motorbike licence will be an added advantage.

G / SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
  • Well-developed Community mobilization skills.
  • Excellent training skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in written and oral English and Chichewa.
  • Passion about ECD, child protection and working with children.
  • Strong report writing skills and experience.
  • Good team work and networking skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, especially MS word, excel Power point and outlook
