After Caring Coordinator

Responsible to: TTVSBoard of Directors

Reporting to: TTVS Carer Manager

Salary: Scl 6 scp 27£23,698pro rata per annum = £13,450

Length of Contract: until 31st August 2017

Hours of Work: 21hours per week, mainly during normal working hours, though some flexibility may be required to suit the needs of the post.

Holidays: 23 days pro rata plus Bank Holidays pro rata plus 2 additional non statutory days between Christmas and New Year pro rata.

Location: This project will cover Torridge and North Devon (‘Northern’ Devon). Although the post will be based in Bideford, some travel is likely to be necessary in order to ensure effective recruitment of volunteers and support to Carers across the area of benefit. Travel expenses will be reimbursed at the rate of 45p per mile.

Background: TTVS (Torridge Voluntary Services) has been supporting Carers since 1996 and current services include a range of Young Carers’ projects and a highly regarded Sitting Service. TTVS also provides services which support the health and well-being of older people in Northern Devon and additional support for those living in the rurally isolated areas of Halwill, Woolsery and Winkleigh.

TTVS has successfully secured funds from the Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales to continue the AfterCaring Project. After Caring provides support to Carers in Northern Devon who are facing periods of transition and change linked to the end of a caring role. Using volunteers with experience or understanding of the caring role, After Caring will provide intensive, time limited mentoring and befriending support to help carers at key stages in the end of life and end of care pathways so that they can:

  • better anticipate and plan for periods of transition
  • get better coordinated support when they need it
  • can better manage the practical and emotional impacts of change and
  • can engage with new social networks and activities – including volunteering.

The project has emerged from the clearly expressed needs of older carers and responds to well evidenced lack of support and poor coordination of services for carers in this situation.

TTVS is seeking a skilled and committed Coordinator to work with the project Steering Group in order to continue the mentoring service and to support older Carers to better plan for and manage periods of change and transition.

Role and Duties:

Mentoring and Volunteer Development

  • To manage the operational implementation of the recruitment, vetting, training, induction, supervision and support of volunteer mentors and other volunteers for the project in line with project guidelines and best practice.
  • To keep a register of project volunteers and records of mentoring matches and mentoring activity and to complete all other administrative tasks as required

Identification and Support:

  • To identify relevant Carers and assess the needs of the Carer and the person for whom they care within the remit of this project.
  • Be the named point of contact for the After Caring service.
  • Work alongside the Carer to facilitate the process of choosing/accessing a range of appropriate/ supportive services – including identifying those Carers who will be mentored through this project.
  • Work with other service providers to ensure that they are doing what they can to meet the Carer’s needs and that these services are well coordinated.

Development and Engagement

  • To work with and support the project Steering Group to:

Develop tools and information aimed at encouraging and supporting Carers and the person for whom they care plan for issues around end of life/end of Care

Identify potential further unmet need relevant tothe beneficiarygroup.

Research and identify suitable services to meet the needs of beneficiaries

Represent the views and needs of After Caring beneficiaries at a strategic level

Liaison and Partnership Working

  • Maintain and further develop strong links with relevant local service providers.
  • Ensure there are strong cross referral mechanisms between this project and other relevant groups and agencies.
  • Keep other agencies/service providers informed about new pressure points on the service and need as it emerges.

Knowledge and Information

  • Ensure that the project is flexible and responsive to emerging issues by remaining up to date and abreast of any new developments and ensuring that the Project Steering Group is appropriately briefed.

Reporting, Monitoring and Evaluation

  • To work with your Line Manager and the Steering Group to maintainthe performance management framework for this project – including decisions about appropriate tools to measure how far the project is meeting its stated outcomes.
  • To disseminate the learning of the projectand ensure that good practice evolved from the project is disseminated in line with project aims.

Fulfill all the reporting requirements of the Project.

Any other duties deemed appropriate by the TTVS Board of Directors or your Line Manager.

  • A relevant Qualification to a minimum of Diploma level (e.g. Community work, Volunteer Management, Social work etc) or other appropriate/relevant qualification.

  • A track record of training around volunteer recruitment and management

  • At least two years work experience with older people, Carers, or other relevant work experience (i.e. health and social care or with vulnerable groups and individuals).
  • Significant experience of recruiting and supporting volunteers
  • Experience of facilitating good partnership working and of working in partnership.
  • Experience of producing written reports.
  • An understanding of the principles behind effective publicity and experience of producing publicity material.
  • Experience of establishing or administering systems for monitoring and evaluation.

  • Work experience in the field of Dementia or mental health.
  • Experience of project and/or service development with comparable scope.
