Responsible for: Delivering Artes Mundi’s and MOSTYN’sPublic Engagement Programme for Broomberg and Chanarin’s Divine Violence in the wider context of MOSTYN’s group exhibition WAR 1(19 July – 2 November 2014).

Background
Artes Mundi in collaboration with MOSTYN will showcase new work by the artist duo BroombergChanarin (winners of the Deutsche Börse photography prize 2013) in conjunctionwith the group exhibition WAR 1, showing at MOSTYN from 19 July – 2 November 2014. This newly commissioned installation will bring an extra dimension to debate around war in light of the World War 1 centenary, and more general ideas of conflict.
Artes Mundi is an internationally focused arts organisation that identifies, recognises and supports contemporary visual artists who engage with social reality and lived experience, and who contribute in some way to our understanding of humanity.
Artes Mundi is a research process that brings together groups of artists whose work stimulates debate about social and political themes. Every two years our programme culminates in a major Artes Mundi Exhibition in Cardiff, Wales and the awarding of the prestigious Artes Mundi Prize. This is accompanied by a programme of events and talks for the general public, activities with schools, communities and sponsors, a Teacher Training programme involving primary, secondary and trainee teachers and a series of events and performances. This framework of activity aims to generate debate and discussion which reaches well beyond Wales and the UK.
MOSTYNAcross its six galleriesMOSTYNshows varied and exciting exhibitions which showcase the best contemporary art being produced in Wales and brings to Wales some of the most interesting art being made internationally. By providing a stimulating, accessible and varied Education and Outreach Programme MOSTYN also offers the opportunity for a wide range of audiences to engage with the exhibition programme and the work of professional artists.
Position Details
Artes Mundi and MOSTYN are seeking two part time Live Guides to support the gallery’s accompanying audience engagement programme. The Live Guides will be a valuable point of contact for audiences, interpreting BroombergChanarin’sDivine Violence and complementing the wider context of MOSTYN’s group exhibition.
Artes Mundi’s Live Guides are integral to nurturing the relationship between the public and contemporary visual art. They play a vital role in making the art accessible to the public and creating a meaningful experience at the exhibition.
Live Guides will be employed throughout the exhibition at MOSTYN (19 July – 2 November 2014). Key responsibilities:
•Devise and present weekday workshops to pre-booked schools
•Lead free guided tours for the general public and pre-booked groups
•Devise and present family activities and workshops at weekends and during school holidays, some of which may be offsite.
- Be within the exhibition spaces and available to answer questions from the general public who want to know more about the artists and the exhibited works
- Appointed Live Guides will be responsible for contributing towards documenting and commenting on the activity surrounding the exhibition and engagement with audiences.
There will be a five day training and preparation programme for Live Guides. During these days Live Guides will:
- Research background information on the artists and their work
- Devise themed workshops and activities to meet specific Curriculum requirements and school projects
- Explore how to engage children of different age groups and assess the appropriate levels of language to use
- Devise holiday and weekend activities for families
- Explore how to talk to people who feel uncomfortable with the art
Person Specification
Essential
- Excellent presentation and communication skills, including the ability to converse with a wide range of audiences verbally and through writing at a range of levels with individuals of all ages
- A fine art or related degree
- A good understanding and knowledge of contemporary visual art
- Proven experience of working with a wide range of individuals and groups in a learning context, eg. teaching, community learning, adult learning
- A creative and flexible approach to devising art based activity, and the confidence to develop ideas as part of a team
- Commitment to providing high quality visitor care, welcoming visitors and listening and responding to their needs with empathy
- Enthusiastic, ready to engage, reliable
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends as appropriate

- Teaching experience
- Experience of working with community groups and businesses
- Post graduate qualification in art or education
- Spoken Welsh
- The ability to converse in another language

This appointment is offered on temporary contract with Artes Mundi.
Working Hours
Both Live Guide positions are part-time at 16.5 hours per week over 3 days. The days may vary throughout the exhibition and are likely to include weekends.
Salary
The rate of pay is £10 per hour.
