Key Purpose
Providing regular one-to-one support sessions which help students to address the barriers to learning created by Autistic spectrum disorders and/or dyslexia. This could include coping with anxiety and stress, how to deal with concentration difficulties, time management, prioritising workload and creating a suitable work-life balance.
Main Duties
  • To meet with students on a one-to-one basis to provide individual support sessions. This will usually be on a weekly basis during term-time. Dependent on the student this may be done face to face or via skype.
  • To support the student with regard to the impact of their disability on both their studies day to day life at university.
  • To provide practical advice and guidance to the student in a non-judgemental, confidential setting.
  • To maintain confidentiality (other than in situations where there is a duty of care concern in which instance you would liaise withMandy-Jayne).
  • To assist students to: develop organisational skills, manage their workload and maintain the necessary focus on academic progress.
  • To aid students to develop effective coping strategies and techniques for dealing with situations arising at university.
  • Where appropriate, to help overcome the stresses of transition to a new environment.
  • To complete all paperwork required for claims for payment, including obtaining student signatures and submit this to the office in Scarborough via email.

Essential Attributes
  • Knowledge of and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of HE institutions and experience of working within this sector.
  • Experience of working in a role providing guidance/ advice.
  • Experience of working on a one-to-one basis with people with Asperger syndrome/Autism and/or Dyslexia to assist them in developing coping strategies to promote independence.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Good organisational and effective time management skills.
  • To have a positive attitude towards disabled people and to be committed to enabling students to reach their full academic potential.
  • To be committed and reliable.
  • Meet the requirements of the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS).

- All 5 NAS core autism online training

Experience; Autism, Stress and Anxiety;Autism: Supporting families) or NAS tutor-led
course ‘Understanding Autism’ or
‘Introduction to autism and the SPELL
framework’ or
- other training, including at a HE institution,
delivered by an appropriately qualified
trainer (a qualified trainer from a recognised
organisation/charity, or a trainer who can
demonstrate a relevant qualification in
autism) OR
Holds a PG Certificate in Autism / PG Certificate
in Aspergers AND a teaching qualification
(minimum Level 4) / None at this stage
