In Home English Tutoring
Welcome / Welcome to Jika Jika Community Centre, we are a ‘not for profit’ organisation, our mission is to create community connectedness and provide people with the opportunity to become involved more fully in community life.Volunteers are an asset to the Centre and their contribution is always welcomed and appreciated.
Purpose of Volunteer / Jika Jika Community Centre works with people who live on the older person’s public housing estate in Northcote. Jika Jika Community Centre works within a Community Development framework and focuses on community strengths and one on one support for residents.
Volunteers are an essential part of the on the ground work that we do. Jobs may vary and change depending on the needs of the residents we work with.
Roles / There are many ways in which volunteers can support the English Tutoring Project. These include;
- Provide support to older people living in the community to learn and enhance their English skills.
- Provide support to asylum seekers living in the local community who are unable to access funded English language programs.
- Use resources provided though the AMEP online modules.
Skills Needed /
- Friendly manner, ability to relate to people from all walks of life, with different backgrounds and age groups.
- Have a TESOL or CELTA background or be prepared to undertake training through AMES.
- Patience & understanding
- Have an understanding of adult learning styles.
Time and Attendance / This is a day time tutoring program.
Day and time to be negotiated between the volunteer, student and the Community Development Worker.
Supervision / Volunteers will be provided with supervision, support and training when required.
