Edward Steichen

Thesis:With the help of his friend Alfred Steigliz, Edward Steichen revolutionized the world of photography. He made photography not only the best medium to capture world events, but also capture the beauty of world as an art form.

  1. Introduction:Edward Steichen did for photography what Bill Gates did for computers.
  2. (Needs to include an attention-getter, such as a quotation, question, opposite opinion, fact, statistic, or definition)
  3. Biographical information
  1. Edward Steichenwas born in Luxembourg on 1879. At the age of 3 his family

moved to Michigan( Simkin 1)

  1. His mom and dad were from Luxembourg, from families that were of peasant status. She wanted Edward to grow up in the United States because there were so many opportunities for him there (Steichen 1)
  2. They moved to Michigan so his father could work in the copper mines. When his father fell ill his mom opened a millinery shop (Steichen 1).
  1. His mother work ethic inspired him deeply.
  1. Even though she worked extremely hard to be the sole person responsible for all finances…working a lot of hours, she still found time to be a good mom. Being a mother came first to her, and she made sure that I would grow up knowing wrong from right. Her heartfelt words of wisdom inspired the “family of man” series of images ( Steichen 1).

THIS IS BY NO MEANS ENOUGH BIO…I JUST WANTED TO SHOW YOU HOW I USED THE TWO SOURCES / PARAPHRASED NOTES I PROVIDED FOR YOU WITH. YOU NEED TO TELL US ALL THE BIO INFO YOU NEED, BIO INFO SHOULD BE RELATED TO THEIR IMAGES. I TOLD YOU ABOUT HIS MOM…BECAUSE HIS MOM INFLUENCED HIS WORK. I TOLD YOU ABOUT HIS PLACE OF BIRTH AND DATE BECAUSE THEY ARE RELEVANT TO HIS IMAGES. For additional info you would of course have a C. D. E. ect…..

  1. Description of Works: He is known for his artistic images as well as his images commercial and war photography.

A. Edward Steichen, The Flatiron (1905)

1. The flat iron is probably the most famous of Steichen’s images. Steichen added color to the print that forms by using layers of pigment suspended in a light-sensitive solution of gum arabic and potassium bichromate (Steichen 57). This is a perfect example of what Steichen would do to his images to give them an Impressionistic feel. Instead of being a crisp image showing the building, he has a nice haze with just a tint of color. The branches are actually the star of the image. The lines bring your eye throughout the image, eventually bringing your attention back to the famous New York building. Even though the image is missing the concept of contrast, I still feel this image is an extremely successful composition. The vignette ( the black areas around the edges of the frame) and the lighting create a feeling of warmth as it spotlights one of architecture’s innovative designs. ( this is not cited because it is my own opinion based on my own previous knowledge of photography)

AGAIN, THIS IS BY NO MEANS ENOUGH PHOTOS TO CRITIQUE! YOU NEED TO CRITIQUE SEVERAL OF THE ARTIST WORKS. So for additional photos you just have a B. C. D. etc…YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PUT THE ACTUAL PICTURE IN, I JUST THINK IT IS SOMETIMES HELPFUL. WHEN YOU CREATE YOUR POWERPOINT, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PUT THE IMAGE ON THE SLIDE AND COPY AND PASTE YOUR INFO FROM YOU OUTLINE IN THE NOTES AREA OF THE POWERPOINT! SOOOOO EASY!!!!!

V. Conclusion: Edward Steichen transformed photography into the art form it is today. He not only created timeless images that will inspire photographers for time to come, but he also documented the past to give the world a better understanding of historical events.
