We don’t just create “good drummers,”
we create GREAT performing percussionists!
Below is a simple questionnaire to determine motivation, goals, current skills, and level of desire of the potential student. OK, so you’ve decided to take “drum lessons”… please take a few minutes to answer the following questions:
1. Explain to me briefly why do you want to take drumming lessons?
2. What are your goals as a musician? (choose one or more)
A. To become a professional one day – I’m that serious
B. To augment/enhance my current school band/orchestra/music program – want to be competitive for any musical performance awards possible (All State Band, AllCounty, American Idol (<-ok, just kidding)
C. To be at least good enough to play professionally in my spare time in a local group
D. Just to have some fun in my spare time – don’t want or need to learn to read music
E. Other(explain)______
3. Are you willing to practice a minimum of one hour daily or make a commitment of at least 7 hours per week between lessons (if you miss a day, make up for it with two hours the next day, etc)? Or how long will you commit to practice each day?
A. Two Hours or more a day; at least 14 hours a week between lessons
B. At least one hour to two; at least 7 hours a week between lessons
C. 30 minutes to one hour; at least 3.5 hours a week between lessons
D. Less than 30 minutes daily; at least 2 hours a week between lessons
E. Do I have to actually practice? Think I’ll reconsider…
4. Tell me briefly about your musical educational background to date. Any formal music education? Describe, with whom, level, and how long?
5. What do you want to learn? (pick one or any combination)
A. Full percussion techniques as it applies to the art of set drumming (to include reading music – drum charts, jazz band charts, rock, all styles and genres – i.e. with the goal of being capable of one day becoming a “studio drummer”)
B. All percussion to include mallets, tympani and drum set
C. Simply to augment and enhance my current school music/band/orchestra program
D. Just to play a drum set “by ear” – basic technique and principals – for fun only
Required Materials (at expense of student and additional materials dependent upon answers to the above):
-Metronome (EVERYONE)
-Books (to be determined) – probably no more than two at any given time; George Stone’s “Stick Control” will be essential
-2 Pairs of 5B Sticks (bring one pair of your own to lessons)
-Brushes (bring when asked or required)
-Must have at minimum a snare drum size practice pad to practice on
-For any drum set lessons, a very basic set will be required with the minimum:
- Snare drum
- Bass drum and foot pedal
- High Hat and (2) HH cymbals
- Ride cymbal
- Preferably at least (1) Mounted Tom and (1) Floor tom (tom toms are not necessarily required but are required to learn drum fill techniques)
-Practice pad drum sets are available and can be used as a substitute but prefer to use real drums as tone variances (sound) are essential with proper stick control and finesse… these points help separate great drummers from “good”…
-Note: A parent or designated guardian must attend each lesson with any student under 18 years of age
Current available lesson times (subject to change with at least one week’s notice either by the instructor or by the student):
Mon, Tues, Wed, Thur, Fri: 4:00 – 4:45 pm; 5:00 – 5:45 pm; 6:00-6:45 pm
