Westfield Soccer Association Spring U8Program

The WSA Spring U8Program for boys and girls has returned to a developmental training and skill building structure and is designed to bridge the gap between fall second grade soccer and the U09 fall travel program. Unlike the past two years, there will not be a U8 spring travel program this year.

The spring U8 program will operate under the guidance of UK Elite and will consist of weekly clinics, practices, and small side games. The program runs from Friday,April 16until Saturday, June 12. There will be two training sessions per week, on Fridays and on Saturdays, for each gender. This program is intended for, but is not exclusive of, those who are considering trying out for travel soccer in the spring. Eligible players must either be born between 8/1/95 and 7/31/96 or who will enter the third grade in the fall of 2004.

Additional program information and on-line registration is available at the new and improved WSA website, Registration is open from February 20 to March 2

New Website Address

The Westfield Board of Education now uses for its employees’ e-mail addresses. If you would like to contact your child’s teacher, please use the first initial and last name of the teacher followed by @westfieldnjk12.com.

Congratulations

The Education Fund of Westfield funded the request for a grant in the amount of $2,762 for Geraldine Morrison, June Gleason, Betty Ann Kaltenecker and Sandra Stanton. Congratulations!

Philhower Fellowship

March 12 is the deadline for nominations for the twelfth annual Charles Philhower Fellowship award designated for a full-time elementary teacher in the Westfield Public Schools. Nominations should specify ways in which the teacher has demonstrated outstanding teaching, interest in children and continued pursuit of professional growth. The teacher must be a full0-time faculty member in Westfield for a minimum of five years. The Fellowship recipient is honored at a Rotary luncheon and receives a grant to further professional growth or to enhance classroom activities for students. Letters of nomination are invited from interested citizens and Westfield public school staff members and should be addressed to: Charles Philhower Fellowship Committee of the Westfield Rotary Club, c/o Office of the Superintendent of Schools, 302 Elm Street, Westfield, NJ 07090.

Helping the Children

Our 4th and 5th grade Leadership team of the EarlyAct Proram, which is supported by the Westfield Rotary, has decided on its first project of the year. The “Helping Hand Club of Jefferson School” will be collecting articles for the children’s Orphanages in Nepal. A flyer is included in this journal, describing the specifics. Congratulations to this group of students for showing that “Character Counts” at Jefferson School.

Safety Concerns

It has been brought to my attention that a few parents are crossing over Landsdowne in the wrong direction to drop off their children by the curb. This practice is very unsafe for our children. The Westfield Police department has been notified of this situation.

A Gentle Reminder

Please remind your children to remember to bring all necessary books home with them from school for their homework. While our custodians gladly assist on occasion, it does take time from their cleaning schedule. Thank you so much for helping your children and our custodians in this regard.

Mini-Chat

Questions, suggestions, comments? Come meet with me outside the main door at 2:45p.m. on Fridays. In this informal way, I hope to meet parents and to discuss Jefferson School.
