Japanese Government Scholarship to Study in Japan for Three Years
The Monbukagakusho (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology) in Japan offers a unique scholarship opportunity for students who wish to study at a Japanese Senshu-gakko (specialized training college). The scholarship includes one year of intensive Japanese language study and two years of specialized training in a chosen field, from April 2012 to March 2015 at a selected Senshu-gakko. Tuition, housing and airfare are covered and awardees are provided a monthly stipend.

UHCC students who successfully completed English 100, Math 100 and are interested in one of the areas of study below are encouraged to apply. Eligible applicants will be required to take English, Math, and Japanese exams on O‘ahu. (Japanese language is not a requirement.) Applicants who pass the written exams will be interviewed. Up to three students from Hawai‘i may be nominated to Monbukagakusho in Tokyo, Japan. Monbukagakusho will review nominees worldwide and announce the names of those conditionally accepted in December 2011.

Eligibility (must be met at the time of application):

  1. US citizen (non-US citizens must apply in their country of origin)
  2. High school graduate or GED recipient
  3. 17 – 21 years old as of April 1, 2012 (born between April 2, 1990 and April 1,1995)
  4. Able to leave for and arrive in Japan April 1 – 7, 2012
  5. Ineligible:
  6. Service members or civilian employees on active military list when scholarship period begins
  7. Grantees of a scholarship provided by an organization other than Monbukagakusho (including a government organization of home/another country) for the period April 2012 – March 2015
  8. Previous recipients of a Japanese government scholarship (unless more than three years have passed since the first day of the month following the final payment of the previous scholarship as of April 1, 2012)
  9. Students currently enrolled at a Japanese university (unless will be completing course of study and returning to home country before the end of 2011)

The above student is applying for the Monbukagakusho Scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to promote cultural understanding of Japan through language and professional training. It covers tuition, housing, and airfare, and provides the student with a monthly stipend for three years at a Japanese Senshu-gakko (professional training school).
UHCC and Consulate General of Japan at Honolulu (CGJ) conduct an initial screening; administering English, math, and Japanese exams; and an interview. If the CGJ nominates the above student to the Japanese Government (Monbukgakusho) to compete internationally, there will be an additional application process. In this case, the campus advisor/counselor serves as an on-campus resource for the student during the nomination application process, reviewing and guiding the student in collecting documentation (e.g., academic transcripts, high school diploma, Certificate of Enrollment). The campus advisor/counselor also serves the CGJ as an alternate means of communicating with the student nominee.
2011 Timeline
Mid-May: Monbukagakusho Scholarship exam and interview day.
May/June: Nominees are notified of nomination by the CGJ and sent final application forms.
August: Final application forms and materials are due to CGJ and forwarded to Monbukagakusho.
December: Monbukagakusho makes final selection.
