Journal # 1 Home

In Chapters 29-31, Jane enjoys a bit of domestic bliss at Moor House, Marsh’s End with the Rivers sisters, before switching homes again to her School Cottage at Morton…

Jane, an orphan, has had various “homes” throughout the story…

Reflect on her various “homes” and what each offered and lacked…

What does “home” mean to you?

What is the importance of having a “home”?

What aspects/qualities are needed to have a “home”?

Journal # 2 Jane Eyre Reflection

Jane Eyre Chapters 34-End

Take 10-15 Minutes to reflect on your thoughts about the final chapters of Jane Eyre and the novel as a whole.

What did you think of the ending and the novel overall?

Why do you think this novel is beloved by so many and continually read, as well as so often adapted for modern audiences?

I would like to discuss these elements:

  1. St. John’s pursuit of Jane… What do you think of this relationship?
  2. The symbolic nature of Rochester’s disabilities.
  3. Rochester and Jane’s telepathic connection
  4. Rochester and Jane’s marriage
  5. The last chapter…ends with St. John???

Journal #3 JOHN DONNE

John Donne’s poetry, which we will read today, takes up the big issued of being a human being: Love, Death, and God.

Take some time to explore your inner head and heart spaces.

Try to articulate the feelings and thoughts you have about some of these intangible yet important topics…

Journal # 4:Romanticism

Take some time to reflect on what you learned about Romantic poetry and the social, political, and economic forces of the time.

Romantic poets used simple and unadorned language to explore the significance of commonplace objects, the beauty of nature, and the power of the human imagination.

The speakers in Romantic poetry speak in the language of feelings, or of the heart.

This exploration of the emotional experiences of ordinary people was revolutionary.

Write some poetry that attempts to convey an experience and/or feelings you’ve had in the last week or so…

This is a quick poem I wrote a couple weeks ago:

I ate some Chipotle
At the new one by my house
I ate dinner alone in public at a fast-casual restaurant
My old friend's mother called about suits for his wedding
I ate the burrito, without meat.
I read about the New York Mets on my IPhone
I watched the teenagers and families
Order and eat burritos
And stare at glowing rectangles
Cradled in their less dominant hands,
While in the others rested, for a time,
huge burritos.

Journal # 5: Journal # 5 Tintern Abbey…the restorative powers of nature

In “Lines…Above Tintern Abbey”, Wordsworth meditates on the restorative powers of the natural world…

What do you think of the importance of natural beauty and spending time in the natural world?

Can you identify with Wordsworth’s experience?

“While with an eye made quiet by the power
Of harmony, and the deep power of joy,
We see into the life of things.”

Pick a line or two from the poem which sticks out to you!

Journal #6 Frankenstein Introduction CRISPR

Thematically, among other things, Frankenstein deals with the ethics and consequences of scientific discovery and application of that discovery…

Within the last few years, a groundbreaking discovery was made in the field of Genetic Engineering: The CRISPR/Cas prokaryotic immune system, which has the potential to vastly simplify the process of gene editing!

What do you think about our experiments with Genetic Manipulation so far as described in the video?

Do you agree with the point of view in the video?

Do you think use of CRISPR technology as described is inevitable? Is right? Is it progress?

What limits, if any, should be placed on the use of this capability? Why?

Where do you see the future going with this technology?

Journal # 7: Walton’s Letters, Frankenstein’s beginnings

Compare Robert Walton and the stranger with respect to their situations, attitudes, goals, and personal qualities.

Why does Robert Walton find the stranger so attractive?

What do you think of Walton’s ambition and work ethic?

“And now, dear Margaret, do I not deserve to accomplish some great purpose? My life might have been passed in ease and luxury, but I preferred glory to every enticement that wealth placed in my path” (3).

What are the ingredients for great success? What must a person do to achieve glory?

What are the positives and negatives of desires such as Walton’s? What is Glory

Journal #8VF’s Education

VF details his education and singleminded passion in these chapters.

Reflect on your own Education:

Are there distinct moments that come to mind when you knew you had learned something valuable?

  • Doesn’t have to be formal education!
  • Who was involved in that moment? Describe them.
  • Who are the people who have helped to foster your passions and have helped you to learn?
  • Learning/growing doesn’t have to be academic
  • What are you passionate about? What excites and interests you?

Journal Entry #9 Justine is Convicted

"Ever since I was condemned, my confessor has besieged me; he threatened and menaced, until I almost began to think that I was the monster that he said I was. He threatened excommunication and hell fire in my last moments if I continued obdurate. Dear lady, I had none to support me; all looked on me as a wretch doomed to ignominy and perdition. What could I do? In an evil hour I subscribed to a lie; and now only am I truly miserable.“

  1. What did you think of Justine’s wrongful conviction?
  2. Why would she confess to a crime she did not commit?
  3. How do you feel about Victor’s inaction in this episode?
  4. Was he at all justified or rational in his decision not to explain the reality of his monster?
  5. Have you heard of False Confessions and wrongful convictions happening in our own criminal justice system?
  6. What do you think of the justice of our current criminal justice system? Explain.
