TSKL, using a five-digit numbering plan, can accommodate future telecom service needs for Kiribati without problems for about ten years or so. Nevertheless, as a long-term strategy, TSKL will be working on a six-digit numbering plan so that TSKL has a fall-back plan should this become necessary. Furthermore, spare numbers are still available for future needs.

27XXX (one thousand numbers) will be free when VHF (Maiana, Marakei and Abaiang) on these islands is replaced by DRCS. Once DRCS is commissioned, these islands will be using numbers from 3XXXX. These thousand free numbers could be allocated to Betio as additional numbers.

30XXX (one thousand numbers) will be free when the analogue mobile telephone is replaced by GSM. GSM will be using 9XXXX (ten thousand numbers). These thousand free numbers could be given to Bikenibeu as additional numbers.

TSKL still has available number ranges from 86XXX to 89XXX (four thousand numbers) for inhabited islands.

Spare numbers are also available in the 5XXXX (ten thousand numbers) and 6XXXX (ten thousand numbers) ranges (twenty thousand numbers in total) that could be used on audiotext services bearing in mind that the 7XXXX (ten thousand numbers) range is with Reach/Telstra Australia for audiotext services.

TSKL will replace the current analogue Mobile system with the GSM in 2004 and this will be announced as soon as the GSM is commissioned.

Numbers from 33XXX to 49XXX and 83XXX to 85XXX will be commissioned over a number of years starting in 2004.
