BIGUPGRADEPROGRAMFOROURBUSIESTSTATION

TheupgradeofCentral stationcomprisesaprogram ofworksinvolving thestaged deliveryof five separate projects over three years, beginningin September 2016.

Itspurpose is torevitaliseand moderniseBrisbane’s most highly patronisedstationandreplaceorupgradeall of theservices andfacilitiesthatarelife expired and contribute

toanexpensive and constantly growingmaintenance program.

Allof theplatformswill beupgraded tocreatean efficient, uniform and modern new look expected of apremium station.

Platforms1/2and3/4will be raisedto enablelevelentryboarding (Platforms 5/6arealreadyhighlevel)and roof extensionsover theseplatforms at theFortitudeValleyend willprovide moreshelter.

Platform escalators, lifts and stairs will be modernised.

Anew roof over the upper concourse will createa lighter, brighter feel for this important BrisbaneCBD landmarkand showcasesome of theheritage features of theoriginalCentral stationbuilding bounded by Edward,Ann and Creek Streets.

In addition to improved wayfinding, pedestrian flow through, the station will be enhanced by thereplacement of twoexistingescalatorsandtheinstallation of athirdattheEdwardStreetend of the upper concourse, increasing station access viatheANZACSquaresubway.The liftin this areawillalsobeupgraded.

Platform andupper concourse worksareexpected to be delivered concurrently, startingwith the upgradeof Platforms1/2and3/4inearly 2017with theircompletion plannedprior tothe Commonwealth Games inApril 2018.

pdtArchitects’conceptdrawingof thenew EdwardStreetstationentrance. The additionof athird escalatorandtheextensionof theroof over thisareawillassistwithpassenger flow in the upper concourse area.

WHEREDOWE START?

The Central Station UpgradewillbegininSeptemberwith thecompleterenovation of thearea used by thestationstaff for daily stationoperation.

This‘backof house’work isexpected totakethree months, with no impact on train services and very littleactivity visibletothe public.

Someearlyinvestigative works forthe otherprojects, such as location of services in ceilingspaces in the upper concourse andplatform areas, will take place before project commencement in February/March2017.

SITE OFFICE

Asite office will be established in the northern subway connecting with WickhamTerrace, and is expected toremainfortheduration of theprogram.Public accesstoWickhamTerracevia lift and stairswill be maintainedat all times.

Tradersin thisarea willnot be affected.Accesstoallbusinesseswill be maintained and sightlines will beuninterrupted sothatit’scleartothepublic that it’s BAUon theconcourse.

PROJECTDELIVERY

The‘backof house’renovation at thestationwill involve a 24/7 programofworks.

Work on the platforms willlargelyoccur duringscheduled weekend closures, with some night workswhere thesecan be completed in theshort window between the last and first train.

An estimated750peoplewillworkon thisproject during the three year design and construction period.

Thestation will remain operational throughoutthe upgradeandnormalpeakhour services willbe maintained.
