ITALY EARTHQUAKE L’AQUILA PROVINCE

As reported in the previous messages, the relief operations related to the earthquake that hit central Italy on the 6th of April are still ongoing. The stricken area has been divided into seven smaller zones, each one is placed under the responsibility of a Local Coordination Centre (COM). Coordination of the overall activities is carried out by a Local Emergency Management Authority (LEMA) based in l’Aquila, in the premises of the School of the Italian Border and Revenue Police.

All persons affected by the earthquake have been accommodated in hotels, tents and private houses. Some figures updated on Thursday April 16 th, h. 14.00 local, are reported below.

Up now, 64.752 persons have been assisted. The 37 Advanced Medical Posts have performed almost 3000 checkups, together with the some 800 provided by the field hospital. The overall figure of forces deployed is currently of 12.268 units of personnel belonging to all agencies and organizations of the National Civil Protection Service. Among those, 110 psychologists are helping the population suffering from the shocks caused by the earthquake.

Damage evaluation is still ongoing and it is carried out by 780 Italian experts. In order to facilitate and to foster exchange of experience and good practice in this field, the Italian Civil Protection Department has invited foreign partners to send their own experts to assist the National ones. Up now, eight experts sent by EMERCOM Russia have already reached the city of l’Aquila, and 8 technical experts selected in the framework of the European Community Mechanism of Civil Protection are expected to arrive by Saturday, April 18th.
