Dear Parents,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you and your child to Kindergarten. An exciting year awaits us as we work together to enhance your child’s academic, social and spiritual development. It is a time for your child to experience a love for learning.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Mrs. Ellen Nikosey and I am beginning my fifteenth year as a member of the St. Ann’s faculty. I have a Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood with a Masters in Special Education. I hope to inspire your child to discover and learn new concepts about themselves and the world around them in a nurturing environment. It is my goal to create a student-centered learning environment and provide your child with several hands on experiences that will be informative as well as enjoyable throughout the school year.

The Common Core State Standards will be covered on a daily basis through small/large group meetings and activities within the centers. Please refer to my class page for a list of the standards. Also, I will keep you informed on class happenings, important dates and weekly events on the class page. Please use the following as guide to help you and your child navigate better through kindergarten.

Kindergarten Procedures:

Homework: Reading is an essential component to your child’s academic success. Please read every night for 15 minutes.Homework is assigned on Monday and returned on Firday, unless specified otherwise. A Weekly Newsletter is given out on Monday to be used as a reference for the curriculum and homework. Please refer to my class page (Classroom News) for a copy of the Weekly Newsletter. *School website: stannschoolstatenisland.com

Birthdays: Your child is allowed to celebrate his/her birthday in school. Please let me know in advance your plans for the celebration. We have 26 students in the class: 13 girls – 13 boys. Please make sure all cupcakes or cookies are peanut-free.

Snacks: Your child may bring a drink and small snack (such as goldfish, crackers, pretzels, etc.) to school each day. Please do not send in any cans or bottles. If you could put the snack and drink in separate bag, it would be very helpful.

Teacher/Parent Contact: The best way to contact me is through my email at enislandhowever, if that is not an option a written note is perfect. All emails will be checked only during school days. If you would like tomeet with me, please notify me 2 days prior to the day you are requesting a conference.

Extra-Clothes:Your child will need to have a full set of extra clothes available in the event of small accident. Please put the clothes into Ziploc bag with their name. Also, please label all of your child’s clothing.

Attendance: When your child is out of school, an absentee note must be sent into school upon their return.

I believe the key to your child’s academic success is a positive parent/teacher relationship. In my experience as both a mother of four and grandmother of two, I know firsthand that you are your child’s first teacher. Together, we can support and guide your child as they begin their journey through Kindergarten. Miss Michelle and myself are looking forward to a fun and exciting year.

“Once a Patriot, always a Patriot”

Sincerely,

Mrs. Ellen Nikosey
