IT CoordinatorMathematics Lecturer
The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Schools Enrichment Centre (AIMSSEC), in Muizenberg, invites applications from suitably qualified candidates, for the position of IT Coordinator and Mathematics Lecturer.This is a one year full -time contract position of 40 hours per weekwith possible further extension.
About AIMSSEC:
Since its inception in 2003 AIMSSEC’s focus has been on teacher development, running a variety of blended-learning courses for in-service teachers concentrating on deepening content knowledge and introducing effective teaching strategies. AIMSSEC is building capacity to meet the pressing demand from teachers for professional development. Many teachers without any mathematical qualifications have been required to teach mathematics and so to give more young learners in South Africa their entitlement to a good mathematical education, these teachers must be trained. Teachers require lifelong learning to keep up to date with content knowledge, teaching techniques and the changing demands of the world of work. AIMSSEC offers Mathematics Subject Leader Training courses through distance learning to empower teachers so that they can, in turn, train other teachers.
Duties:
- Maintain an overview of the use of ICT in AIMSSEC administration and teaching, and in teaching mathematics in schools, and advise the AIMSSEC Academic Manager and colleagues of possible new developments;
- Management of emails, printers, telephones, data storage and backups;
- Create online applications and enquiry forms and oversee the maintenance of master lists and the archive of all data on current and previous students and courses;
- Managing the installation and maintenance of all IT software and hardware;
- Train and support academic and administrative staff in the use of IT systems;
- Manage and delegate IT work to graduate interns and Teaching Assistants;
- Scoping new technologies and advising on future strategies;
- Design, maintain and manage the AIMSSEC domain and websites;
- Design and manage FET mathematics training curriculum requirements for AIMSSEC courses, including assessment of coursework and assignments;
- Deliver lectures, seminars and tutorials in contact sessions and interactive white board or TV broadcasts;
- Teaching on residential courses for teachers by presenting IT skills training and demonstrate how to use the Moodle Learning management system;
- Oversee and advise on how the AIMSSEC blog is used to support teachers and other stakeholders and to provide free online teaching resources;
- Maintain AIMSSEC Social media platforms and GivenGain pages.
Requirements:
- System Administration and Networking knowledge;
- Linux administration and support;
- Knowledge and experience of Moodle;
- Maintaining WordPress sites;
- Basic HTMLand CSS knowledge;
- Ability to problem solve in IT setting;
- Knowledge of Windows, OSX and Linux platforms;
- Managing workflows.
Recommendations:
- A degree in Information or Computer Science, Mathematics or Engineering;
- Experience in managing Google Apps for Education;
- Teaching and/or tutoring experience in mathematics;
- Working in an academic environment.
The incumbent should have a passion for mathematics and for improving educational opportunities for underprivileged learners; excellent oral and communication skills and planning and organising skills; energy, flexibility and willingness to go the extra mile to achieve project goals. AIMSSEC is looking for a team player with good interpersonal, team leadership and people management skills.
The incumbent must be in possession of a valid unendorsed driver’s license.
