NEW COURSES DEVELOPED
High School
updated and revised:
2009 - Revised syllabus forVideo Technology 1to include more hand’s on work with
the cameras and editors by shortening the curriculum of the history of radio/TV
in the U.S. from 6 to 3 weeks. Created “Broadcast Jeopardy” game played in
class to reinforce broadcast terminology and to increase the “fun value” of
learning.
2010 - Revised syllabus for Advanced Broadcast Journalism to include weekly
radio/TV newscasts.Required all advanced students to learn each and every TV
news and production position by rotating jobs for each newscast. Selected
advanced students were assigned to produce video programs highlighting
activities of other schools in the CISD. Bought a TriCaster video switcher/editor
which upgraded our look and was portable so students could record weekly pep
rallies in the gym and play them back on local cable TV within half an hour.
The revised curriculum saw an increase from 42 students in my 7 daily classes
in 2008 to 108 students in those 7 weekly classes at the end of 2011.
Undergraduate College
updated and revised:
2013 - Revised video section of syllabus for JOUR 4210 Media Performance (co-taught
with Michelle Redmond) to include “staged news conferences” in class to teach
students how to handle legitimate news media questions with facts and not
speculate or be coerced into giving “emotional responses.”
2014 - Revised syllabus for JOUR 3300 Introduction to Visual Communication to
includemore emphasis on video editing by requiring twice-weekly videos
targeting students’ efforts to pace editing with flow of the video and to use visual
effects such as “Ken Burns” to improve the look of videos using primarily still
pictures. Introduced “A Slice of Life” videos to show students how to use natural
sound, music, and interview sound to enhance production values of the videos.
2015 - Revised syllabus for JOUR 4343 Visual News Storytellingto include twice-
weekly TV newscasts that focused on news and production jobs in a TV station.
Students were required to produce their own Demo Reels and contact 4 TV
stations in the 100-200 ranged market size to showcase their news skills for
possible work in those TV markets. Introduced “Videolicious” - a cell phone
app for creating TV news stories which students were required to create for
grades. Took students on a field trip each semester to KXII-TV in Sherman,
TX to both see how a news station operates and also to showcase my students to
their news director. That station and KTEN in Sherman, as well as other TV
stations in Amarillo and Wichita Falls, TX have been hiring some of my students
in their news departments as a result of students’ overall preparedness for work.
STUDENT NON-CREDIT WORK IN RADIO
2015- Created and managed new online radio station - NTDailyradio.com - where
students(without credit) produce weekly 15-minute news-oriented programs
covering news, sports, entertainment, a monthly Ask the President program,
station promotions and station IDs. Trained and oversaw audio production efforts
by students to produceairworthy programming.
2016 - Mayborn Special Problems class in radio that will allow students to do more
advanced radio work - podcasts, full newscasts, documentaries, etc.
OTHER PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
2016 Video producer/editor to recognize formerMayborn/Pulitzer Winners/Finalists at
theUNT Student Union Sept. 29, 2016. This involved research, video interviews,
assembling photos and documents connecting those honored withMayborn and
the Pulitzer Prize.
2014, 2015 - Video producer/editor for Celebrate Mayborn for two years, assembling up
to 30 individual “roll-ins” for the annual event; to include testimonials, students’
recognition, faculty recognition, individual and group awards, stills and graphics.
During the event, I played these “rolls-ins” at specific times in the program to
appear on two giant screens for the audience when introduced by host Neil Foote. I
also produced a 10-minute “walk-in” and “walk out” videos for the event.
2015 Joyce Anne Brown Innocence Clinic (JABIC) - Ms. Brown of Dallas had been
convicted of murder and later freed by the work of an Innocence Project connected
with Centurion Ministeries After attending a presentation at the national AEJMC
conference in San Francisco, CA in August of 2105 hosted by Professor Alec
Klein of the Medill Justice Project, I became interested in getting the Mayborn
School of Journalism involved in a multi-department UNT “Innocence-Style
Project” aimed at investigating murder convictions in Dallas, Collin and Denton
County of persons serving life sentences in state prisons in Huntsville, TX.
This effort, led by myself and Mark Donald for Mayborn SOJ, became a joint
project with the UNT-Dallas School of Law and the UNT School of Forensic
Sciences. Unfortunately after meeting for several weeks, the Mayborn SOJ had to
abandon the project because the legal team involved said there was no guarantee
we could publish the results of the cases involved for fear of retribution. Without
that guarantee, there was no reason for us to continue, and we wished them well.
