Is It In The Cards?Sept. 30, 2009

Data Findings Sheet 1

Group Color/Symbol:

Names of Group Members:

List the number of the cards (large black number below figure) you currently possess: 11, 31, 70, 7, 32

Observations:

What similar traits do your cards share? (list 5) Same Color background. They all have a star on them that gives a one digit number. Some have a blue ball, some have a grey ball, some have a red ball. They also have a number in the lower right hand corner that have a decimal in them. They have two blank boxes on the top. The star is placed differently on each ball. The bottom left numbers are green and the bottom right numbers are blue.

What would you predict about the common traits in future cards? In other words what features will you expect to find when you retrieve cards in the future? The cards in the future will either have red circles with a star or a blue circle with a star. Next red circle card will have 33 and the next blue circle card will have a 700. Thenextgreennumberwillbe460andthe other green number will be 190

What differences are there between cards? (list 5) The circles are all different colors and sizes. The placement and the size of the stars on the circle are different. The numbers in the starts and the boxes are different. The numbers in the rectangular boxes are all different. The numbers in the stars are also differnt

What can you predict about differences in future cards? All the numbers in the stars, rectangular boxes and in the lower boxes will be different. The circle will be a different in color and size. The placement and size of the star on the circle will be different.

Analysis:

Are there any duplicates (two cards that are the same) in the set so far? Do you expect to find some? Why or why not. Please use complete sentences in your answers. There are no duplicates so far in the cards that we have. We do not expect to find any repeats because we figured that there would be a pattern in all the numbers, circles, and stars.

What trends were there in the sequence of cards found? (Does the order of their discovery matter?) The red card's big numbers increase by one. The blue card's big numbers multiply by ten.

Were there trends involving the people who gave you cards? They are not all women but they do not teach the same grade level. We suspect that the different colors of the ball have something to do with the grade level they teach. Also we think that the numbers on the star have something to do with it.

What hypothetical “principles,” or characteristics can you suggest regarding the card contents? For example, are all blue circles odd-numbered? Does the star’s position connect with the large black number? The star placement is like a clock the numbers go in numerical order. All the red circles are the same size.

Consider making 3 “safe” predictions and 3 “wild” predictions, so as to encourage both careful and creative thinking. Our Safe predictions are that, they would have the same kind of circle, they would be in the same number range and they would be from a women. Our wild would be if the numbers were related in some way, they would a relationship between the teachers that give us the cards and the place that the number in the star was on in the circle

Can you predict a card content (or 2) that you expect to find in the future? Be specific. For example, on a card you find in the future, what will be its number, its circle’s characteristics, the star’s characteristics?Weexpecttofindthesamecolorsastheprevious5andand maybe the numbers might be similar.

What other insights/hypotheses can you suggest about the cards? There are not enough cards to make a really accurate prediction.

How confident are you in the accuracy of your predictions so far? (scale of 1-10?) Explain. We are about a 7.

General questions:

How have you worked with or against other groups? We have worked well together so far and have cooperated well together in to trying to decode the pattern of cards. Against other groups we have also worked well and did not give away any teachers that gave us cards.

What would be the benefit of seeing the cards of the other groups? We would know how many the other groups had and perhaps generated a theory on who has the cards.

Are you winning? No, we are not winning yet.
