BlackMountain MBO Series 2 (Hay Bike Festival) – 27 April 2014

The second Mountain Bike Orienteering event in the Black Mountains MBO Score League took place on Sunday 27 April as part of the Hay Bike Festival and true to form the mountains kept everyone on their toes with difficult weather conditions to add the already tricky navigation out on the exposed moor land.

The league leaders exchanged places this time with Gary Davies on top with 398 and Ifor Powell in 2nd with 388, equal 3rd were Andrew Dawkins and Mark Morgan with 380 out of a possible 500. The individual category winners are on the main score sheet.

The event area was a real leveller as can be seen when you review the results, with more than 50% getting over half the points on offer and no runaway winner. It was interesting to hear whether a predominantly clockwise or anti-clockwise was the better option; the jury is still out and I will leave that for individuals to decide when they ride the same area next year! Whichever route was taken a stiff climb was required up into the foothills but this was rewarded with some great riding across open mountainside and upland farmland.

I would like to thank the team of helpers for their invaluable support getting the events off the ground, Luke and Anna from Drover Cycles (Bike Fest Organisers) and also the staff at Trewern OEC for kindly allowing us to use there facilities.
