IRIS Flare List and Initial Notes

Graham Kerr, June 2014

(Flares from lists compiled by Dr. Tian, Dr. Reeves & Dr. Li)

We (Jiong and I) are ideally looking for flares that have good IRIS observations (slit covers the flare ribbons/sources, good cadence, ideally full coverage, but at least the impulsive phase), as well as good RHESSI HXR observations in order to guide RADYN modeling of the flaring atmosphere in question. Hinode observations are also useful but not required. SDO AIA/HMI observations should be available in every case. Flares should also be on disk (ideally near-dish to disk centre but won’t rule out any flare near the limb) – limb eruptions, however, are not suitable.

***********************************

Black are flares that seem like good choices (i.e. good IRIS and good RHESSI). Unfortunately there are not very many of those yet.

Blue are flares that should be considered but aren’t ideal, either due to lack of complete RHESSI or a mid-range IRIS cadence etc.,

Orange are flares that have no RHESSI coverage but are otherwise potentially good for IRIS flare studies.

Red are flares that are ruled out for study,

-Slit not on footpoints

-Very low cadence

-No significant GOES obs.

-No spectral info

The following is an initial overview of the flares and should be checked to confirm the details (if you find any additional flares let me know!)
