iPad User’s Guide - There is an online iPad User’s Guide on the iPad.

  • Tap the Safari icon
  • Tap the Book icon on the toolbar in Safari
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the “Bookmark” list to locate the iPad User Guide

The Device

  • Dot - forward facing camera
  • Black bar across the top - cellular capable
  • Top - power button
  • Powering off the device
  • Press Home button to put to sleep
  • Hole at top- headphone jack

Cleaning – You can use a damp cloth or Lysol wipe to clean your iPad screen.

Overview of Basic Skills

  • Opening Apps – Tap an app icon to open the app
  • Zooming In – Pinch fingers together on the screen.
  • Closing Apps – Touch Home button
  • Moving to Another Screen of Apps – Swipe your finger on the screen to the left or right
  • Switching Between Open Apps
  • Four fingers on screen swipe right to left can swipe between open apps
  • Double tap the Home button. Choose the app from the row at the bottom of the screen to select the app

Organizing Apps

  • Rearranging apps
  • To another location on the same screen
  • Tap and hold any app icon until all of the icons start to wiggle
  • Press and hold on a moving icon
  • Drag the icon to the desired location on the screen and release
  • To another screen – You can have up to 11 different screens of apps on the iPad
  • Press and hold an app icon until it wiggles
  • Tap and hold the app to one side of the screen
  • After a second or two it will shift to another screen
  • To the Dock- By default, the Dock of your iPad holds four app icons. It can hold up to six icons. To add an app to the Dock
  • Hold down an app icon until it starts to wiggle
  • Drag it to the Dock
  • Removing an app from the Dock
  • To remove the app icon that your wish to remove from the Dock until it wiggles.
  • Drag it from the Dock to another location on the screen and release the app
  • Putting Apps in Folders – You can put a up to 20 apps in each folder

Fully Closing Apps

  • Double-click the Home button to show the App Switcher
  • Swipe to scroll left or right to see all of the currently open apps
  • To quit an app, hold a finder on its icon for a few seconds until it starts to wiggle the click the red circle next to the icon to close it.

Deleting an App –

  • You can delete an app from your iPad by pressing and holding the app until all the apps on the screen begins to wiggle.
  • Touch the X next to the app you wish to delete.
  • You will get a confirmation message asking you to confirm that you wish to delete the app. Once you confirm that you want to delete the app, the app will be deleted.

Locating an App – If you have several apps on your iPad you may find yourself scrolling between screens to locate one that you are looking for. There is a Search feature that makes it easier to locate an app.

  • Scroll to the left of the first screen
  • A search screen appears
  • Type the name of the app you want to locate in the search box
  • Once the app appears in the list below the search box you simply touch to app to launch it

*App Switcher – You can double-click on the Home button to access the App Switcher. You can then scroll through the list of open apps to reopen an app.

Keyboard

  • Activating Caps Lock
  • Double-tap on either Shift key
  • Tap the Shift key again to turn off Caps Lock
  • When autocorrect suggests a word, press the space bar to use the word suggested. If it is an incorrect suggestion, touch the screen and keep typing
  • Moving the Cursor to Another Location to Edit
  • Hold down your finder on top of the cursor. A magnifying glass will appear.
  • Drag the magnifying glass (and the cursor) to the desired location in the document.
  • Turning off the keystroke sound
  • Go to Settings
  • Select General
  • Sounds – then move the Keyboard Clicks setting from On to Off
  • Splitting the Keyboard- You can split your keyboard in half, making it easier to “text type” by simply swiping two fingers (or thumbs) from the center of the keyboard to the outside edges.

Locking Orientation – The default setting of the switch above the Volume button on the top/right of the iPad is Mute. You can switch it to Lock Orientation

  • Use Side Switch to:
  • Lock Rotation

You can also lock the screen rotation without changing the default action of the Mute switch.

  • Double-click on the Home button
  • Swipe the App Switcher to the left
  • The curved arrow button can be selected to lock the screen orientation. (You can also adjust the screen brightness and the volume from controls on this toolbar as well.)

Conserving the Battery

  • Fetch not Push – Your iPad regularly checks the server to find the latest Push Notifications, like Facebook updates. This can increase the demand on your battery. To turn off Push Notifications
  • Go to Settings
  • Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  • Turn off “Fetch New Data”

Conserving Battery Continued – If you are out and about and need to conserve batter you can disable Location Services. This helps various apps discover where you are so that you can find local amenities.

  • Settings
  • Location Services – Toggle from Off to On

NOTE: You can help prolong your battery lifespan by charging it to full capacity and then letting it drain completely once a month.

Photos/Internet Images

  • Saving/Copying Images from E-mail or a Website – Tap and hold your finger on the picture. A message will appear giving you the option to Save Image or Copy. If you select Save Image the image will be placed in Photos on your iPad.
  • Slideshow

  • Organizing Photos into Albums
  • When viewing an album tap Edit
  • Add
  • Select photos to add to the new album
  • Tap Done

Unfreezing the iPad – If you iPad screen freezes and won’t respond to touch try the following

  • Soft Reset
  • Touch the Sleep button to make it “Nod Off”
  • Press the same button again to wake it up and Slide to Unlock
  • Hard Reset – If your iPad doesn’t respond to the soft reset then try the following
  • Hold the Sleep button for a few seconds
  • Drag the “Slide to Power Off” button
  • Hold the Sleep button again to restart the iPad and Slide to Unlock

Printing

There is no need to install drivers on the iPad to be able to print. To pirnt, the printer must be an AirPrint printer. For a list of airprint compatible printers -

Purchasing Apps

  • You can stop others from accessing certain apps
  • Go to Settings
  • Tap General
  • Restrictions
  • Enable Restrictions
  • Enter a Restrictions Passcode (You will be prompted to re-enter the passcode
  • You can turn off certain apps and restrict installation or deletion of apps

White on Black – By default the iPad displays blsck text on a white background. If you read a lot you may find it easier to read white text on black background

  • White on Black – Toggle the switch from Off to On
