Communications and Marketing Director
Reports to:Executive Director
Status:Permanent, full-time salaried position

Salary Range: TBD upon experience
Scope of Responsibility.This position is charged with maintaining a favorable public image for the Iowa Environmental Council, overseeing all marketing and communications efforts including but not limited to media relations, member communications, website and social management, messaging strategy and development, marketing and event planning. The Director is also responsible for working with the Development Program to build financial support for the organization, and coordinating with program staff to develop outreach strategies for the Council’s programs, policies and coalition building efforts with members and partners. The Director will be a key member of the management team of the Iowa Environmental Council. This person will work with the Executive Director and other staff as described below.
Position Responsibilities
Public Relations
Production of publications/materials to support communications, campaigns and other information including monthly electronic newsletter, quarterly printed newsletter, annual report, membership materials, fact sheets, legislative priorities and position papers.
Manage the Council’s website, blog, and social media accounts.
Manage the Council’s action alert system—with an on-line database –that facilitates grassroots communication with decision-makers.
Develop and maintain positive media relations including fielding media inquiries, developing media releases and press kits, scheduling meetings with editorial board members and reporters, ghost-writing, editing and pitching stories and op-eds. Maintain media list and provide media training to staff.
Assist Executive Director, Board of Directors and staff in developing communication campaigns and strategies for major policy issues and projects.
Help develop and maintain positive relations with member organizations and the general public. Assist the Development Director and other staff with prospecting, recruitment and retention of new member organizations.
Oversee marketing and advertising budget.
Assist Development Director and other staff with creation of marketing, membership and development materials.
Outreach
Work with staff to develop public presentations about the Council’s work
Coordinate with member organizations to maximize outreach.
Event Planning, Management and Publicity
Assist with the planning, coordination, management and promotion of the Council’s annual conference, lobby day and annual fundraiser, including event development, speaker arrangements, design, publicity, etc.
Administration and Planning
Conduct routine analyses of the results of communication efforts, including metrics, and provide monthly reports.
Recruit and supervise marketing and communications interns as needed.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required, advanced degree preferred.
Commitment to the goals of environmental quality and sustainability.
Minimum of four years relevant experience in media relations, community outreach, public relations or a related field.
Strong analytical and written and verbal communication skills, media relations and event planning and experience.
Expertise in website management, social media and email/advocacy/fundraising databases.
Self-starting, results-oriented dedication; ability to work under pressure on deadline.
Ability to work effectively in policy and strategic decision-making.
Ability to work in dynamic team environment.
Ability to work occasional evening or weekend hours.
Desired
Existing relationships with Iowa media.
Experience working in non-profit settings with mission-driven staff and board.
Exposure to public policy development and advocacy.
Grassroots organizing experience.
Experience managing and recruiting volunteers.
Experience with Adobe Creative Suite.
Work with coalition of individuals and agencies.
