KEY SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES

Associate Professor Adrian Schoo, Physiotherapy Discipline Leader, Rural HealthSchool, La TrobeUniversity (Bendigo, Mildura, Shepparton and Albury-Wodonga)

The RuralHealthSchool aims to enhance rural health workforce capacity building, recruiting from rural areas and providing education in rural Victoria. Dr Schoo is also Adjunct Associate Professor at the Medical School of Flinders University. His research interests include workforce development focusing on allied health and rural service enhancement, and effective workforce models that utilise expertise and inter-professional collaboration. Clinical and teaching interests include musculoskeletal management, and identifying and addressing barriers to maintain physical activity. His work also informs policy makers in relation to careers and workforce retention in rural Australia.

Jay Lee, Exercise Rehabilitation Coordinator in YMCA Metro, East Loddon Mallee

Jay is an Exercise Physiologist (ESSAM) and Exercise Rehabilitation Coordinator in YMCA Metro East Loddon Mallee. He is also a session Presenter at Life! Taking an action on Diabetes. The Clinic to Community Program, in which Jay takes a leading role, was winner of YMCA innovative program in 2010and a nominee for an Aquatic Recreation Awards in Innovative Programs 2011.

Jan Bourke, Physical Activity Officer, COTA

Jan has a Bachelor of Education (Physical Education)and 23 yearsteaching experience across all levels from Prep-12. She has developed educational and physical activity programs to meet the specific needs and interests of students of all capabilities, always with a focus on fun. Since joining COTA in June 2009she hasdeveloped Back in the Game with the support of funding from VicHealth. Her skills in mentoring new instructors and adapting rules, equipment and other aspects of sports and games have enabled the implementation of Back in the Game at several venues across Victoria.

Stephanie Harper, Manager Active Ageing, COTA

A secondary science teacher for 11 years, Stephanie completed a Master of Human Nutrition in 1998. She has over ten years experience in health promotion, initially in sun protection and nutrition at The Cancer Council Victoria and then coordinating diabetes prevention initiatives at Diabetes Australia–Victoria. During this time she developed an interest in the health benefits of physical activity, particularly strength training. Since 2007 Stephanie has overseen COTA’s strength training endorsement scheme Living Longer Living Stronger™and COTA’s other active ageing projects. She also has a personal interest in health and fitness.

Richard Biss, Falls Clinic Coordinator & Physiotherapist, CaulfieldHospital

After graduating from Auckland University of Technology with a BHSc (Physiotherapy) in 2000, Richard worked until 2004 at PalmerstonNorthHospital, NZ then spent two years travelling and working in the UK. Over this period he gained experience particularly in neuro-physiotherapy but also in cardio and musculo-physiotherapy. Since November 2006 he has worked at the Caulfield Community Rehabilitation Centrewhere he has gained considerable experience in falls prevention, balance assessmentand exercise prescription for improving balance/falls prevention through his role as the Falls Clinic Co-ordinator.

Paul Taylor, Director, The Body-Brain Performance Institute

A former British Royal Navy Aircrew Officer, Paul is an Exercise Physiologist, Nutritionist, Neuroscientist and Research Professor at The University of San Francisco. As Director of the Body-Brain Performance Institute he delivers Executive Performance and Leadership workshops to large multi-nationals. He is also Director of The Personal Training Academy and recently co-launched a worldwide initiative, PTA Global.In 2010 Paul created and co-hosted the Channel ONE HD TV series, Body and Brain Overhaul. He is the creator of BioAge software that is used by many Australian gyms and appears regularly on The Biggest Loser series as a consultant. Paul is a widely published author, national and international speaker and recipient of the Australian Fitness Network’s 2010 Presenter of The Year Award.

For example, if you are a COTA member or an instructor at LLLS providers and would like to take Option 1, choose ticket 'COTA members & LLLS Providers-Afternoon concurrent session-Option 1'. (Please have your COTA membership numbers handy.) If you are not aCOTA member or an instructor at LLLS providers, choose Non-members. Use the blue scroll down bar next to the ticket information to see the 6 types of tickets.

Note: Options 2 & 3 are the same but topics are offered in reverse order because numbers will be limited to allow active participation.
