Family Matters Survey:
Investigating the problems facing American families in society today
Project Overview:
This collaborative research project is designed to turn you into a true sociologist! You and a group of your classmates will work together to research a problem facing American families in today’s society. You will develop a survey about the problem, conduct the survey, analyze the data, and ultimately, report your findings to the class. The final project is due at the end of Unit 5, but each Unit will contain specific steps toward the completion of the project.
Group Formation:
Your teacher will form groups and assign each group a specific problem facing American families in today’s society. The list of problems is as follows:Abuse and family violence, Divorce, Poverty, Teen pregnancy, Addiction, Care of elderly family members (ASOC #8.1).
Project Roles:
Everyone in your group is a Researcher and will have individualresponsibilities for each step of the project.In addition, your group must select someone to take on each of the following roles. These three roles come with additional group responsibilities:
1.Discussion Leader: Each step of the project requires group discussions. The
discussion leader’s role is to make sure his or her group is active in discussions and being productive toward the project work.
2. Survey Manager: After writing the survey questions, your teacher will post each
group’s survey onSurveyMonkey. The Survey manager’s role is to work with the teacher on posting the survey and collecting the results.
3.PPT Creator: After analyzing the survey results, your group is responsible for making
one final PowerPoint presentation that covers all information from the project. Each group member will submit information, but one person needs to compile the information into a presentation. The PPT creator will take all of the information from group members and make one PowerPoint Presentation.

Group: Group discussion to divide the research questions up for research (5pts.)

Unit 4 Project Goal: Conduct Survey - Survey Analysis
Group: Group discussion on survey results (15 pts.)
Individual: Take all group surveys (10 pts.)

Unit 5 Project Goal: Final PPT Presentation of Survey
Group: Group discussion to divide up PowerPoint content (5 pts.)

Please note that detailed directions are provided within the lessons, and your teacher will provide the due date information for each step. With that said, it is always a good idea to read through the project steps before beginning a collaborative project!
Unit 1 Sociology as a Social ScienceProject Steps 1 - 3
Step One: After your teacher assigns you to a group and gives you a topic, complete 1.04 Topic Group Discussion and discuss a topic focus and who in your group will take on the roles of Discussion Leader, Survey Manager, and PPT Creator.
Step Two: Using your topic focus, work individually to create a source list with correct MLA citation for your group to use for background information. Submit the source list to the 1.04 Survey Sources Dropbox.
Step Three: Post your source lists to the 1.05 Sources Group Discussionas an attachment to share information.

Step Four:Individually, complete the survey brainstorm worksheet and submit to the 2.01Survey Brainstorm Dropbox. Remember that these surveys will be taken by teenagers, so the questions should be ones that a typical teenager can quickly answer.
Step Five:Post your brainstorm to the 2.05 Final Survey Group Discussionand then work together to create a final list of survey questions. Remember that these surveys will be taken by teenagers, so the questions should be ones that a typical teenager can quickly answer. The Discussion Leadershould make sure everyone shares his or her brainstorm lists.TheSurvey Managerposts the Final Survey to the group discussion for teacher review.

Step Six:Complete 3.01 Research Group Discussion to divide up your research questions for background research. The Discussion Leadershould make sure that the questions are divided up evenly among group members. Each group member will research two of the survey questions.
Step Seven:Individually, write a short research paper highlighting information about the different research questions. Your source lists from Unit 1 should come in handy! This information can include state and national level information, but remember that all outside information needs to be correctly cited using MLA citation. Submit your research paper to 3.04 Survey Research Paper Dropbox.
Step Eight:Complete 3.04 Share Research Group Discussion and post your research results. The Discussion Leadershould make sure everyone posts his or her research paper.If you need to make any edits to your survey questions, be sure the Survey Managernotifies your teacher.

Project Steps 9 - 11
Step Nine:Your teacher will post links to all of the different group surveys. Be sure to take all group surveys! Remember to take this step very seriously in order to obtain the best results for the class. To encourage complete honesty, all of the results will be anonymous. As a way to keep track of your survey completion, complete 4.02 Survey Participation Dropbox.
Step Ten:The Survey Creatorwill post the survey analysis link on the group discussion. Individually, complete the survey analysis questions and submit to 4.06 Survey Analysis Dropbox.
Step Eleven:Complete 4.07 Analysis Group Discussionto discuss your group’s survey results. The Discussion Leadershould make sure everyone has a chance to post his or her thoughts on the survey.

Step Twelve:Complete 5.01 PowerPoint Group Discussion to divide up the PowerPoint content. The Discussion Leadershould make sure that the slides are divided up evenly among group members.
Step Thirteen: Individually work to create your PowerPoint slide content. Submit your slides to 5.03 Final PowerPoint Dropbox.
Step Fourteen:Post your slides to 5.03 Share PowerPoint Group Discussion. The PPT Creatorshould take all of the content and create one final PPT. Then, post the final group presentation to 5.03 Family Matters Discussion for the entire class to view. Send the PPT to the teacher.
Step Fifteen:Complete 5.04 Final Project Review and submit it to 5.04 Final Project Review Dropbox.
